New State Theatre

Located in Northwich, Cheshire. As far as can be ascertained this cinema never opened.

It was incomplete when the UK went to war in September 1939. In October 1940 it was advertised for auction as the New State Theatre. It was described as ‘completed to the roof’, with plans for 1,300 seats, a cafĂ©, a lounge, and full stage. It was used as a grain store during the war.

It was offered for sale to the local council in February 1954 for use as a public hall. The offer was turned down as being beyond the council’s resources. The council had its eye on the Pavilion Cinema as a possible public hall.

It looks not to have opened as a cinema. It is not mentioned in the Kinematograph Year Book 1954. Adverts for theatre events are elusive. The site is now Theatre Court: not State Court (or some other name which would have carried on the venue’s operating name).
