Kaw Art Cinema

Located on the east side of S. Kansas Avenue, between SE 4th Street and SE 5th Street. The Crystal Theatre was opened on September 28, 1907. It was closed in 1952.

Taken over by Dickinson Theatres, it reopened as the Kaw Art Cinema on May 6, 1954. It was closed in 1961. A 1962 photograph shows a view of the soon to be demolished Kaw Theatre. This area of Topeka was part of the federal government’s Urban Renewal program in the 1960’s to rehabilitate aging and decaying inner cities either by massive demolition, derelict housing clearance, or development.

It was first mentioned as the Crystal theatre in the newspapers on September 28th, 1907. It closed in 1952 and reopened by Dickinson theatres as the Kaw Art Cinema on May 6th, 1954, and closed in 1961. Grand opening ad posted.
