Elite Theatre

This first iteration of the Elite name was opened in 1909 by Georgianna Higgins in an old wooden building that had been built sometime before 1897, and had served as a saloon. It is still a saloon on the February 1909 map, but by 1914 was converted to a theatre known as the Elite Electric Theatre.

This building served until 1931, when it was vacated for a new location just to the south, retaining the Elite name (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). It’s unclear if the building was demolished at that point, but it was either remodeled into or replaced by a store. At any rate, the site today is a vacant lot.

The Elite Electric Theatre was the only movie house listed at Crawford in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory.
