A movie house called the Capitola Theatre was in operation by 1914, and was probably in the same location it occupied in the 1920’s, in a complex of buildings begun in 1884 as a dance pavilion and expanded and remodeled over the years to accommodate multiple other uses (address given above is approximate.) From 1924, the building was also home to the Hawaiian Gardens, a large night club of not entirely savory reputation, but hugely popular prior to the depression of the 1930’s. The Capitola Theatre was still open in 1931, but was listed as (Closed) in the 1932 edition of Film Daily Yearbook. The entire complex was destroyed by a fire on February 8, 1933, leaving the town without its own movie house until the opening of the second Capitola Theatre in 1948.
