Located in Maryport, Cumbria. The Athenaeum was built in 1857 with the hall on the upper floor. The ground floor contained offices, a Mechanics Hall with a library & reading room and was later taken over by the British Legion.

In late-summer of 1910 the upper floor Athenaeum was converted into the Athenaeum Picture Palace which opened on 12th September 1910. It was operated by the Graves brothers. Variety turns took to the stage between the films. Around 1914 it was renamed Palace Theatre. Around 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. Variety acts were still part of the programme on the stage. The Palace Theatre was closed around 1945.

The building remained vacant and was slowly deteriorating. It was demolished in 1983.
