The Star Theatre is listed on Sanborn Maps 1920 at this location. An advertisement for the Newman Theatre first appeared in the Modesto Bee in February 1919. Film Daily Year Book 1926 gave the Star Theatre 350 seats, increased to 500 by 1931.

On May 6, 1930, the Modesto Bee reported the Star Theatre owned by Gus Johnson has been sold to Paul Brower of San Francisco and will be remodeled and renamed the Newman Theatre.

On March 6, 1936 the Bee reported the Newman Theatre had been sold to the Harvey Amusement Company by L. Dobrzensky and would remain open until the ‘new’ Newman theatre opened. (It opened as the West Side Theatre on August 1, 1940 and has its own page on Cinema Treasures). Sanborn Maps 1941 showed the Newman Theatre building as vacant.

The footprint of the Star/Newman Theatre on Sanborn Maps seems to match the footprint of the market at this location today.

Other Newman theatres listed in American Motion Picture Directory 1914-15 were the Edison Theatre and Electric Theatre.
