The Fox Cape was one of six theatres that lined Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. The Fox had a small balcony with a wide auditorium and spacious and decorative lobby with the staircase to the left of the lobby to the balcony. The facade featured a large marquee and a tall vertical Fox sign.

The caption to this vintage photo claims a location of Cape Girardeau, MO, but does not identify the building. Can anyone? The marquee at left appears to be marked “Little Theatre”: www.i8.photobucket.com/albums/a18/Warrengwhiz/capegirardeau.jpg

If the location really is Cape, the building is probably part of Southeast Missouri State University. I don’t know the campus very well, but I do know a lot of it has the same kind of WPA-era architecture as the building in the photo.

Mike Rivest has a grand opening ad for the Fox Cape, undated, but the opening feature was the 1930 release “Good News.”

The only two Fox theatres listed in the Southeast Missourian on Oct. 20, 1933 are the Fox Orpehum and the Fox Broadway.
