Garden Theatre

The Garden Theatre opened in 1914 on Webster Avenue near 197th Street, not far from the campus of Fordham University. It had closed as a movie house by 1926. The building now houses a plumbing business.

Amazingly, this ancient theatre building still stands and I think it looks in pretty good shape all things considered. To view several pics taken in 2002, click here:

Under the Gas Heats Best sign embossed on the front of the building it says GARDEN THEATER. Around 1985 the building was being used as storage for an electronics company when it was gutted by a fire.

There’s a red canopy over the front door now, otherwise the building looks the same as in Ken’s 2006 photos. It looks like the embossed sign is permanent, which is too bad as I wanted to see the old theater sign.
