Franklin Theatre, Chicago, 1909

This very early movie house opened around 1909 on 31st Street between S. Giles Avenue and S. Calumet Avenue, near Dunbar Park in the Prairie Shores neighborhood. The Franklin Theatre closed during the 1940’s and has long since been demolished.

What a cool facade! Too bad tastes change, and there was no room for this kind of architectural style. I’m sure the ones that survived longer were modernized in the style of that particular year.

More likely they just fell apart by that time. I think they were pressed metal.
