Ken…I thought that they were one in the same theater but I try not to assume anything. There is always the possibilty that the city filed the c/o in the wrong folder. Your tours are a major help in clearing up these mysteries. Since the building was new in December of 1921 that should be the opening year. Even if the city was three months late in issuing the c/o, it still works out to 1921.

LostMemory; The building bounds two streets Richards Street & Pioneer Street (I am presuming the entrance was on the corner). There is actually more of the building running along Richards (the length of the auditorium) than Pioneer (the width of the theatre). So it must be the same theatre building which opened on your 1921 date.

There has been a new finish given to the exterior, but at the top of the building above what I presume to be the corner entrance, there are just faint traces of original decorative detail to be seen.

Film Daily Yearbook’s editions 1926 & 1927 give a seating capacity of 600. The 1930, 1941 & 1947 editions of F.D.Y. all give a seating capacity of 524.

When I do a search of this address, I receive some odd results. A c/o for a New building at 128-130 Richards Street dated December 19, 1921 shows a 524 seat motion picture theater. Another c/o dated July 29, 1945 shows a 515 seat motion picture theater at 83 Pioneer Street. In April of 1957 there is a meeting/hiring hall located at 83 Pioneer Street. In January of 1969, 83 Pioneer Street is a warehouse. In August of 1975 there is a health center at 128 Richards Street. Is 83 Pioneer and 128-130 Richards St the same building, or were there two different theaters around the corner from each other? If it turns out that both addresses are the same building, then the Pioneer Theater opened in 1921.

The Pioneer Theatre building is currently (June 2006), in use as Health Centre.

The Pioneer (sc. 524—sometimes listed as 600) opened around 1922 and closed in 1955.
