Comments about Theatre Three in Port Jefferson, NY

When Theatre Three presented its first show in the building formerly known as Athena Hall, it was known as Theatre Three at the Scrimshaw Theatre. I was in the first musical performed there, ANYTHING GOES, and had a t-shirt calling it the Scrimshaw Theatre.

While looking up something on microfilm in the Port Jefferson Record in 1958 I noticed an article saying the old Port Jefferson Theatre would reopen with a new policy as the Art. And so it did.

Webmaster here’s a chance to consolidate the listing for the Art in Port Jefferson with Theatre Three which are all the same in the same building. The Theatre Three posting was only created in 2007. The last comment for the Art was 2006. Perfect, the comments can be merged on one site.

It’s official. The Port Jefferson Theater can show movies on Sunday.

The Port Jefferson Echo April 24, 1931.

The Town Board legalized Sunday shows by a vote of 8-2. It was already legal to show movies on Sunday in Patchogue, Riverhead, Huntington and Bay Shore. They also approved baseball games on Sunday in Port Jefferson, although no one was certain if there was any ordinance against it. A vote was taken just to clarify the situation.

Mike Glynne takes over Athena Hall and will remodel it.

Athena Hall has been added to the “Mike” Glynne circuit of theatres and will be known as Glynne’s Port Jefferson Theatre. Paul Ruehl of 247 Park Avenue, Manhattan, architect, has already made plans for remodeling the building. New seats will be installed and the floor will be inclined. The entire front of the building will be remodeled and a canopy will project over the street. The balcony on the sides will be removed and the one in the rear will be extended.

Movies will be shown every night except Sundays with a matinee on Saturday afternoons. Beginning January 1st, Glynne’s traveling stock company will play here every Saturday night. Robert Howell, who is an experienced theatrical man, will be the resident manager.

Glynne now operates theatres in Patchogue, Bay Shore, Floral Park, Sag Harbor, Greenport, and Port Jefferson.

Was this also known as the Scrimshaw Theater or was that a different theater?
