Maurice Kanbar, who died at age 93, finally had an obituary in The New York Times, published in the printed edition of Sunday, October 2nd. In addition to his building the Quad, Kanbar is also credited with numerous other innovations, including Skyy vodka, claimed to be a hang-over free product.
Maurice Kanbar, who opened the Quad in 1972, died in San Francisco Aug 20, 2022.
“A longtime supporter of the arts, Kanbar - who founded the Quad, the first multiplex movie house in New York - has donated more than $10 million to endow the Kanbar Institute of Undergraduate Film and Television at New York University.”

Has the Quad Cinema ever considered an “on-line streaming” program, like the Film Forum to bring in some much-needed funds?
Just saying the pandemic in general will be responsible for the closure of many theatres period. Local ordinances may also be too restrictive, such as New York’s, to overcome.
So, under Gov. Cuomo’s edict of 25% of capacity with a maximum of 50 persons per screen, we’re talking 25, 27, 26, 24 for a total of 102. No way can movie theatres survive.

Cohen bought the Landmark chain a few months ago. The main change will be that the Landmark people will be booking the Quad Cinema starting around June. They will continue with rep titles, just not as many.
When you say soon to be a “Landmark Theatre”, does this mean the Quad is being taken over by a “national chain” ? If so will the type of films they present (independent, foriegn etc.) change in any way or will they continue with this type of films as they have in the past?

NYer, I ran a different theatre in Florida, but we just put an usher at the door to the x-rated auditorium at all times.

to AL A. thanks for your info as to this theater’s porn period. i had a feeling it was before i starting coming here which turned out to be the case. from 1978’S “Nighthawks” to “G.B.F.” which opened Jan. 2014 i never noticed anything “seedy” about the Quad.
but then again the N Y Post is a very negative newspaper so I shouldn’t be surprised they painted a negative picture of the Quad. till the last time i went Jan. 2014 i found the auditoriums, lobby and
men’s room to be well maintained and clean. i always found the staff to be courteous as well.
so the N Y Post’s article making it seem as if the place was worn out, run down, etc… prior to closing for renovation is in my view simply not true.
