Sparta Theatre should open on or about 6/29/07, it is up to building officials as of tomorrow. The theatre has 2 stadium theatres and a steep slope screening room that nearly equals the stadium houses. The screening room could not be made stadium because of the loss of seats due to their overall size and ADA compliance. All sound and projection equipment is new and Dolby Digital will be standard in all three. All three theatres have video capability and high-back Greystone Manhattan, plush “love” seats. We are hoping Ratatouille and Evan Almighty will open with Tranformers to follow. Thanks for the interest in our new baby.

so far, it’s not open, what’s holding it up? The theater is opening in the same building where Panera is now, along with a Rita’s that will open soon.

According to locals on the Sparta forum…the theater will open on June 8th, when three new movies open. I guess Surf’s Up will open there as well as Hostel Part II and Ocean’s 13. Hopefully they’ll have carryover from the nearby Newton theater.

Is the theater still on track to open on Friday with the opening of Shrek 3? No word on showtimes for the theater yet.

chersfan –

The Sparta Theatre has been closed since last May. Perhaps you saw Zodiac in another city?

I agree with jersy boy. Sparta needs some new employees. I went once when they were playing zodiac because at the time viroqua wasn’t showing it.

After the movie I wanted a refill on my pepsi. The girl at the counter told me they don’t refill smalls. Fair enough. So I told her, “Okay, I will pay for it then”. She told me no. They don’t do that. So I looked at her funny and said you mean I can’t pay for a refill? And she said no. I told her to just fill it up and charge me for a small. she said no. I asked her, “will you sell me a small drink then?” She said yes. I was thrown for a loop. What the heck is the difference. This way she is wasting a cup. So I said, “ Your telling me, that your going to make me waste this cup and buy a whole new soda – which be the same as you filling my cup? She said yes. So I threw my cup away and bought a small. I left there totally confused and thrown. I won’t go back. They were snutty and rude. They never smile and they make you feel like your bothering them.

Check this link out at View link Looks like those Spartans will either go to Newton, Mansfield, or better yet Rockaway.

The owner of the building has apparently run into issues with his construction project, so I don’t know what the current timetable is.

Any updates on when the Sparta Twin theater reopens as a triplex?

I was saddened to recently drive past the site of the old Sparta Theater. That old building housed many movie memories for me, including all three original Star Wars movies. At one time, tearing it down would have been unthinkable, but the yuppie city people and developers who have moved up here don’t care about any of the local hick landmarks, only about $$$$. Only Newton is left now…

Does anyone know the floor plans and the design of the new movie theatre in sparta?

PeterApruzzese
PeterApruzzese on May 24, 2006 at 7:37 pm

The listing should now be changed to “Closed/Renovating.” The original building is scheduled for demolition next week and a larger one will take its place. Current plans are for there to be a three-screen theatre as part of the building on the ground floor. The second floor will house a restaurant and the third floor will be office space. Projected re-opening is November 2006.

The Sparta Cinema needs a major overhaul…personnel included! I grew up in Sparta and moved my family back here in 2003. We haven’t gone to the theatre until a month ago. What a shock. When I asked the lady at the counter if I could pay with a credit card she looked at me like I had three heads and said very rudely that they only accept cash. I had to go to the bowling alley to go to the ATM…get with 21st century already! Next, I walked my family into the theatre to take our seats, what I saw was appauling. The theatre was damp, the seats were sticky and most were broken, the floor was dirty, the walls showed stains from where the roof was leaking, the aisle carpet was dingy, it smelled of mildew regardless of the popcorn aroma, even the recessed lighting was missing trim kits and the right bulbs. I wasn’t even going to attempt a trip to the restroom. Needless to say, we went because we had gift certificates for the kids and all we had to pay for was my wife and I. Sadly, we will never go back until they renovate and change hands. Unfortunately, I can see someone buying it and knocking it down.

JNZ – We have long-term leases at both locations. The landlord of the Sparta Theatre building wants to sell the property (and has been trying for some time), but that does not mean the theatre would close if that ever happens. The Newton Theatre building is not for sale as far as we know.

Mikey – Regarding the Hudson Street Cinemas, the location was never profitable – and never would be. We chose not to renew our lease and stayed there after it expired to allow time for the landlord to find another tenant and convert it to regular retail space.

Can you please re-confirm that Sparta and Newton are not closing? I have been hearing about it from multiple sources. Hopefully it is just a rumor.

Pete- Thanks for clarifying that for me. It was just b/c I read about the “selling” of the theatre on njo.com on the Sparta forum site. I guess those residents don’t know what they are talking about. I have another question for you, “Why did the Hudson Street Cinemas in Hoboken close back in May with no notice and for what reason?” I never read anything about it in the newspapers. Thanks.
P.S. I live about 8 minutes from the Cedar Lane Cinemas in Teaneck, you guys did a great job renovating it, back when you bought it in 2000. I used to go a lot when it was Movie City back in the day and it was gross. I was just there recently, I saw Monster-In-Law.
