Thanks for the post. You can see the steeple of the St Joseph RC church near the middle on the upper side of the picture. It’s school was on Bathgate Avenue.
@Jorge, I bought most my records from from A- appliance on the northwest corner of Berriman and Pitkin on the other side of the corner of the Kinema theater. Then when TSS opened went there. I did buy maybe one or two Musique also.
I believe this theater should be listed under East Brooklyn. 11207 & 11208 are considered East New York. The one PO on Pennsylvania and Atlantic is 11207. There are two POs covering 11208. One is on Crescent St near Fulton Street is Cypress Hills Station and the other on Sutter Avenue and Chestnut Street is known as the New Lots station.
@palerder I don’t recall seeing any online but I know that there are sites such as THE EAST NEW YORK PROJECT, FORGOTTEN NEW YORK and BROOKLYN PIX that have quite a bit of pictures. The Brooklyn Public Library and The Brooklyn Historical Society also has many pictures. Most pictures are pre ‘70s. There was one site with pictures of the 70’s. The Link is below.
I also read of a Florence Theater on 331 or 321 Bowery Street if anyone has any info on this,it seems interesting. I did a zip code check and nothing turned up on 10002, thanks.
I read an article in the December 3 1923 New York Times that the receipts were stolen by two “Highwaymen”. The receipts were from the Florence theater on West Broadway and the Atlantic Gardens theatre on the Bowery. They hijacked the taxi cab which was carrying the couriers to deposit the money in the safe at the Delancey Street Theater on Orchard Street.

@makoreo I remember a few drug stores along Pitkin Avenue, Sutter and even Belmont. If you are intersted there are sites (groups) on FaceBook that are area oriented. Cypress Hills Houses, CypressHills, City Line, etc. There are also school groups. I know the moderator of this site wants us to stay focused on theaters. Go visit this site for Cypress Hills Houses.
mashen The candy store that I remember are the ones on Atkins and Belmont, Berriman and Belmont, and Berriman and Sutter, Bennett’s was on Shepherd and Belmont and another drug store was on Shepherd and Pitkin, and another one on Linwood and Pitkin. I think there was one also on Montauk and Pitkin. @MASCHEN The East New York Projects have quite a few pictures of the old neighborhood. I have a MySpace page for Berriman64. Brooklyn Pix also has many memories. On FaceBook there are many Berrimanites and ENYers from the pre 1970 era. That IceCream parlor was high end place. I went to Willies on Atlantic for ices and the Deli Beitziner on Pitkin and Linwood for Ice Cream or German Potato Salad. Moe’s near the Kinema for Kinishes. I lived directly across the street from 64! There are also Cypress Hills and Cityline groups in FaceBook. The seem to be quite a few Italian Bakeries along Pitkin Avenue. There was a candy store on Berriman and Belmont also. Pass by Facebook and join in there was a 50 year reunion of PS 64 last year. There are many pictures there.
It seems Samschoe that many theaters had “competition” from the mom and pop stores near them. When we (friends) would go to a theater, Cityline, Premier, Kinema, CrossBay, Ridgewood, Madison, etc that come to mind, we would stock up on the goodies before going in of course sometime we just bought the PopCorn in the movies. My the Kinema we had Moe’s great knishes! The last show I went there for was to see Fania All-star’s “Our Latin Thing” The place looked a little frayed and worn down. But the place was packed.
@ Robert Yes it was still there in 1958 our class went to see a show there “The World’s Strongest Man.” and after the show there was a display of smoking and the danger of it. It has had to be 1960 or 61. I have to double check with my classmate Gary Macchio.
@ Ed many of the buildings on East Tremont Avenue in that area were wonderful and showed very good construction and had its own identity.

Keep intouch my friend. Some of my younger friends when to 302. They tore down a beautiful park to build it. We had to go further away to play ball. Now the IS 302 playground is going to be turned into a parking area for the teachers.

The Mostoff Hardware was on Linwood and Pitkin (south side)Across the street from Mostoff’s on the north west corner was a Drugstore, and on Elton and Pitkin south east corner was the Cozy Bar. If you went to PS 64 there will be a 50 year reunion soon for the class of 1961.
The Flora may have been also known as the Den and/or Eden. I found an article on the closing of three New York Theaters in 1922. The article included the Subway Theater and the Bevilacque Theater. Click here to see the 1922 Article
I saw an ad for the a “Ozone theater” on 101st Avenue near 95th Street. I will post the info when I find it. I remember an elderly man when I use to take him the bank on 95 Street and 101 Avenue that there was a theater a round there. The question I have could that be the Ace theater or were there two theater across the street from each other? One being the Ozone and the other one the Ace.

I remember bakers were bakers, grocers were grocers, etc. I went to JHS 64 and FK Lane. I am part of an FK LANE HS group on facebook, I maintain a JHS 64 page on MySpace and I belong to “Places in NYC and LI that are no more” group. I am sharing a photo of Belmont Avenue where my parents went to shop once a month, I am looking for photos of Blake Avenue pushcarts also. I know the area of the Howard houses well also since I had a sponsor a Carpet Store on Rockaway Avenue, lived on Pacific St and a friend of mind had a garage on Stone and ENY Ave. Take a look at:
The Liberty Theater was located on Liberty Ave between Stone Avenue and and Watkins Street according to the picture I saw on the NYPL site. It was demolished in 1942 and the picture shown is during the demolished, here is the link: View link

I worked in a shoe store on Saturdays, and I would help the Fruit Store near Kaye’s Five and Dime on Essex and Pitkin.
