I understand that the former theater is now the Dollar Store, but does anyone know where I can find a photo of the theater when it was in operation? Thanks!

Mark Goodrich commented about Schine Riviera Theatre on Jan 3, 2018 at 9:26 pm

I just can’t get over how many lovely theaters there were in the area, many of which, like the Riviera and Monroe were first run theaters that played 70mm stereo engagements as well as Cinerama films. I keep running into ads from the 60s that show the Monroe and Riviera showing the likes of “The Sound of Music”, “This is Cinerama”, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”, “Lawrence of Arabia”, the 70mm reissue of “Gone With the Wind”, etc. I am shocked that there aren’t more photos that exist of the theaters when they were in decent shape. I can find no more recent photos of the Riviera. When I was a teenager, both theaters were showing X rated films to survive. How ironic….

I also find it sad that I’m unable to see anything in the new library that mentions the theater at all. I expected there to be something about the history of the site…

I uploaded most of the photos now on the site for this theater and I was wondering if anyone knows approximately when the Atlantic ceased operating as a movie venue. I have looked everywhere and can’t locate a decent photo of the theater when it was in operation. Can any help or direct me? Thanks!

I just added a few new photos of the demolition. The auditorium is down.

Today, January 25, 2014, a ‘celebration’ was held marking the beginning of this theater’s demolition. The 1941 theater is being destroyed after many years of neglect to make way for a new library. The RKO-like spire, the theater’s terrazo floors, fountain and tile work will be incorporated into the library’s design plan. I will post some photos.

I just recently purchased a Cinemascope lens that has this theater’s name engraved into the metal!

Does anyone have any photos of this theater in the 1940s, 1950s or 1960s? I just obtained a CinemaScope projector lens with the name of this theater etched in it. Please let me know! Thanks, Mark

Oh, Yes! I went to SUNY Fredonia too, and saw so many movies at the Cine – “Animal House”, “Halloween”, “Empire Strikes Back” (that one was there for many weeks that summer!), and SO many others…I went to the Cine, to the Cinema 1 (now the Opera House), and the Regent in Dunkirk. These were all run by Mr. Burgett, I believe! Sometimes the woman at the Cinema One box office would let me in at the kiddie price! What memories!

I forgot to mention my name in connection with the photo of the Capitol Theater. It’s Mark Goodrich and I used to live in Wayne County and went to that theater fairly often. How I miss it. My heart broke when my Mom told me it had burned down during a showing of “Footloose”.

BTW, the theater wasn’t torn down until 1975.

Mark Goodrich commented about Playhouse Theater on Dec 30, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Back in the 1970s, I wrote a Hoffman paper on movie theaters in Wayne County, and, at that time, there were still folks around that remembered the Playhouse. I only remember it when we drove by it in the 1970s, and, by that time, it had been closed for quite a while. It was eventually torn down and there are photos online of the demolition. There are also a few photos from the 50s online, but I am wondering if anyone has any photos of the interior of the theater. I have only seen one. Also, I am wondering if the theater ever converted to wide screen in the 1950s.

I have wondered about this theater for quite a while and I am so happy to read these comments. I grew up near Weedsport, long after the theater was gone, but have been fascinated since seeing an old newspaper movie ad from the theater. Does anyone have any photos? Also, when did it close and when was it torn down? Lastly, did it convert to Cinemascope in the 50s?
