I don’t understand this continued hatred for 3D…nobody is forcing anybody to see a 3D movie. Go see the 2D version (or stay home). And, if you check the endless list of 3D movies coming out, it doesn’t appear that the format is slowing down anytime soon. If it is, it’s probably due to an abundance of crappy movies lately (even in 2D) and premium ticket prices. Also, I’m sure decisions are made all the time to favor newer movies (Battle L.A., Rango, Red Riding Hood) over older movies (Bieber, Gnomeo & Juliet) by adding extra screens. It just so happens these newer movies are in 2D and the older ones are in 3D. Don’t jump to conclusions.
I think I figured out the answer to my question “How many projectors are (RealD) 3D-capable?” Five…1 Narnia, 1 Tangled, 2 Tron, 1 Yogi. And Megamind in 2D only. Right? Anybody?
Call me lucky, Mike…I was the only one in the theater today for Megamind 3D. No, Justin. I’m not a Harry Potter fan. Still haven’t gotten an answer to the question “Are the recently installed digital projectors 3D-capable or just certain ones?”

I forgot about the curtains. That was a nice touch back then. I might add they charged a premium for 3D back then too…an extra 10 cents (60 cents for adults, 35 cents for children) to pay for the glasses.
When you say “old theaters”, I assume you’re referring to the “local movie houses” I grew up with. They had one screen, a main feature, and a co-feature (usually a b-movie). You could easily spend three hours at the movies…all for 50 cents (adults) and 25 cents (children). Films ran continuously with cartoons, newsreels and coming attractions (trailers) in between. Most of these double features lasted one week and were replaced every Wednesday. Some were “held over”. Ushers assisted you to your seat. The theaters had individual “personality”, unlike today’s multiplexes. Times have changed. Today, people want choice…something multiplexes provide. Plus, I’m sure cost was a big factor in the transition. To avoid closing altogether, those old movie houses divided up their space and became mini-multiplexes, usually with disastrous results. Or they showed months-old films for about a buck. I think today’s multiplexes stand a better chance of surviving longer than the older ones providing they keep ticket prices affordable. I noticed Rockaway charged $10 (vs. $9) for the morning showing of Jackass 3D. Are we back to that again?
Now that Rockaway is all digital, does anyone know if the newly installed projectors are 3D-capable? Or just the current (I believe) three (excluding IMAX). It appears that there’s still some “sharing” going on.
Justin, my last comment was directed to hdtv267. If someone is going to come out of left field and start criticizing and namecalling, then I want to hear their solution.
hdtv267, help us out…I’m serious. What kinds of theater-specific topics are you talking about? I just mentioned four items that ARE specific to Rockaway (their hand dryers, digital projectors, that they had a bedbug problem [maybe just a rumor], and what they choose to show on their IMAX screen). If they’re off topic, then what do you suggest? BTW, my 65 year old ears are anything but childish! Help us to make this site better, ok?
OK…from now on, theater only stuff…good grief! Now that Rockaway is all digital, what are we gonna talk about? Let me suggest the first item. Get rid of those obscene hand dryers. They’re loud and obnoxious. I use the paper towels. Next item: are the remaining digital projectors 3D capable? Third, what’s the scoop on the bedbugs? Are they gone? Finally, (hope this is on topic) I hope Rockaway will show more “made for IMAX” documentaries like “Hubble 3D”. They’re interesting, educational and deploy some the best 3D out there.
hdtv267, your point is well taken and we can all share the blame for some of the irrelevant posts. I can’t address the bandwidth issue so I don’t know to what extent it’s affected. Lastly, I have never thought of this as a “post competition” (don’t think my buddies Justin and Mike do either so there’s no need to feel sorry for us). I can’t speak for all the others.

Saw Piranha 3D again today (I know, I know, get a life!)…this time in Theater 13 and it was much brighter than last week’s showing in (I think it was in Theater 7). So, lack of light is not necessarily characteristic of the movie itself but it appears to have been that particular projector in 7 for that particular movie. Other 3D movies in 7 were fine. Don’t know much about digital projectors but is it possible to adjust the amount of light getting through or is that amount fixed? BTW, the movie is not doing that well and yet it’s getting excellent reviews (for a change)…I don’t get it! It’s the perfect summer movie for today’s intellectually challenged moviegoer (like me).
WHAT! “Avatar” will not be on the IMAX screen but “Inception” will. The movie is down to No. 9 on Box Office Mojo. Who’s the brain behind this decision?
Saw 9:40am showing of “Piranha 3D” yesterday. The movie itself was a real trip, delivering the goods. Only problem was not enough light projected. Indoor scenes were dark and outdoor scenes darker than usual. This is the first time I’ve seen a RealD movie that was this dark. Gotta do better than this, especially with the already loss of some light that 3D glasses cause.
Hey Mike, I’m still laughing…eye boogers. Where did you come up with that one? I also heard that story on the risks posed by dirty 3D glasses. They must have been referring to IMAX (they’re not wrapped in plastic; rather, they’re supposedly washed). The RealD glasses shouldn’t be a problem. We’re supposed to be getting a fresh pair each time. Maybe some 3D hater made up that story.
If I’m correct, Fast Five will be taking over the IMAX screen at Rockaway 16, not Water for Elephants. Is WFE playing on any IMAX screen?

the top four movies right now are in 3D:
Tron, Yogi Bear, Narnia, Tangled
and the “longest running” movie this year at 166 weeks and still running (Despicable Me) as well.
If this keeps up, Rockaway will have to upgrade a few more systems to handle it.
