The Cinemark Century 16 theater on Shoreline Boulevard in Mountain View is slated to close next week but plans are already underway for it to reopen ahead of the December holidays.

Syufy Enterprises, the company that originally built the cineplex and continues to own the site, plans to rebrand the theater as Mountain View Cinema 16 and get it back up and running again before Christmas, according to Tony Maniscalco, Syufy’s vice president of marketing.

“It’s all happening very fast,” Maniscalco told the Voice. “Basically, we’re taking it back after 20 years.”

The cineplex opened in the mid-1980s and originally operated as a Century movie theater, according to Maniscalco. Cinemark then took over in 2006. Cinemark’s lease agreement with Syufy is expiring at the end of the month, he said.

Moviegoers will see some changes when the theater reopens but Maniscalco was tightlipped about the specifics.

“I can’t say what they are yet,” he said.

For over a decade, Syufy has been aiming to build more than just a movie theater at 1500 N. Shoreline Blvd. Dubbed the Shoreline Gateway project, the developer’s most recent plans show a cluster of eight residential buildings wrapped around a park. The buildings range from nine- to 15-stories, according to a city of Mountain View update. The project would also include retail, restaurants and a fitness center, as well as new streets and a publicly accessible open space area.

Asked how the theater would fit into the proposed development, Masiscalco said he did not immediately have that information.

More details about the theater’s reopening timeline and future plans will be announced in October, according to a Syufy press release.
