This is just wrong. I too am surprised that they didn’t take advantage of the tax credits. The Rock Church is pretty much erasing history. I really hope they keep the Elmwood sign and even light it up (if that doesn’t happen then I just lose all hope and there should be a community dispute if that were to happen). I would have expected a different outcome coming from a religious institution.
Hello everone, I haven’t been on for a while but from what I am reading here, it looks like the Kings will come back. I also agree with everyone else about the original marquee, I saw an aerial photo of the marquee and it looks like some of the original marquee is still there. I would really love to see this theatre fully restored to what it was (with vertical marquee). One question though, how much millions of dollars would it cost to restore it. Also, does anyone know if the Loews Kings still retains its wonder organ? Thanks
Man, something needs to be done, from the looks of the exterior the theatre looks fine but the interior is completely the opposite. I hope this gem is going to be fixed soon before its deemed unsafe like the thunderbolt rollercoaster which was torn down.
For some reason I doubt that will happen. Look whats happened to Coney Island and even the Shore theatre. All three things need restoration and work but we can’t wait too long, even though there have been so many plans, nothing has been done. I hope the Kings will soon be fixed though.
Believe me UA Crossbay you wouldn’t want anything saved, there wasn’t really much of value to save. But I like that they saved parts of the theatre, its better than none.
Thanks a lot KenRoe for the pictures, its good that the original ceiling is still intact, I notice a lot that Modells takes a lot of theatres and converts them into retail space pretty well.
Maybe ‘Tonino meant the LIRR elevated area that is by Rockaway and I think 100th street (it runs by John Adams H.S). That structure has been abandoned since the 50’s or 60’s, they should really put it back in service, to me it looked liked a good route. I agree with LuisV, the Crossbay would never reach the status and grandeur of the Wonder theatres and other great movie palaces. But if UA payed more attention to both structures (1 and 2)the theatres would have been better and may have seen more people. But UA let everything go with the Crossbays, which led to their demise.
Great pictures Ken, its really a shame that a thing of beauty is deteriorating like this. I don’t even live in Brooklyn but I think something should be done to get things moving. I would love to see this theatre in its original look.
I was talking to the manager and I also saw the construction being done after Crossbay was closed. The building was completely gutted and then made to Modell’s specs. The only thing you can really see from the old theatre is the exterior which is now painted in a creamy color. Also the gate area on the Rockaway side is still the same (rusted dull look) and the coming soon area is still that aged gray. Its funny that they used a huge peice of plywood to cover the coming soon boxes. Personally I would say Modells rushed to open this store to make some money. I really didn’t mind Crossbay 1 closing being that it was small and really a bad theatre, but Crossbay 2 was a bad move to close. It just needed a renovation but that idea is dead.
I have a question, according to the friends of Loews website (group who is restoring the Jersey theatre) they said the organ that is now in the Jersey thatre is from the Paradise theatre, how come the paradise doesn’t have their original organ?
I visited the theatre again today and saw a sign that said “Coming Soon Marshalls”. I don’t really understand how they can fit that store in that area. Its really too bad that both Crossbays are officially dead.
I saw the A&E special and I saw various pictures of the King. Well all I have to say is how can they leave one of the most beautiful structures in NY just deteriorating like that. If only I had a ton of money, I would have restored her. I am curious is the structure still safe to go in by the looks of it. I hope this theatre to be restored soon and considered a landmark.
I am happy to see that at least one of the Wonder theatres is still on and will never be demolished. And well obviously Jersey is there too. I hope that they can do this to Kings but so far the theatre is dead. How much did it cost for Paradise’s restoration?
I visited the theatre today and well lets just say there is no chance of a renovation, they took down the sign (imprints still visible) and they completely gutted the interior so its official that Cross bay 2 will not re open. I ll try to get a pic of it soon. It looks like it will follow Crossbay 1 and just become retail space for now.

Why not try to maybe write a letter or something or petition to save the sign. Is there anyway that the sign can become a landmark? Thanks

Great photos Lost Memory.

Is this theatre currently being restored, what is actually happening to it right now?
What is on the current site of the former Loews Triboro?

Is the exterior of this theatre landmarked?

Is the organ in Loews Kings still in the theatre? Will they restore if Kings is ever restored?
What is currently happening to the theatre, what is there now?

After the necessary restorations are done, is there any idea of putting back the vertical marquee and well as said restoring the original marquee?
