Correct address was 40 John Street. The theatre opened in 1913 and sat 1050 people. It was demolished in September 1969.

This theatre and all the buildings are gone now. The Ritz burned down sometime after 1982. The address was approximately 80 Main Street.

This theatre was demolished in the 1920’s to make way for retail. It was originally Horak’s Opera House.

Newman’s Theatre is listed at 4 W Erie Ave in the 1914/15 American Motion Picture Directory. Could that have been the same theatre?

The 1914/15 American Motion Picture Directory places the address as 110 Pine Street (not 10).

Roger Katz commented about Tremont Theatre on Jan 22, 2015 at 2:04 pm

Actually further research shows the Tremont Theatre built in 1926 was the second one on the site. The original Tremont was a church that was converted to a movie theatre in 1910 before being demolished so the newer one could be erected.

The Pastime Theatre opened September 5, 1910 on the second floor of the Gardner Building which was the former YMCA. It is now demolished.

This theatre could not have been built in 1926 as it is listed in the 1914/15 American Motion Picture Directory.

Was this ever known as the Grand Theatre? A 1914 listing puts the Grand Theatre at 267 Main St.

Current equivalent address of the theatre since the renumbering would be 539-543 William St. A church is on the site now, but apparently this is not the old Star Theatre. The Star’s original name was the Arcadia.

An old map from 1939 (http://www.baldwinpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/HicksNeckpamphlet.pdf) indicates this was the third building on the right north of Merrick Street. Google Maps overhead view shows a possible candidate at 2419 Grand Avenue, if this is still standing.

Not sure where that description above came from, but it certainly wasn’t me!

If the comment right above me is correct then this theatre’s address would be 1242 State Street rather than 1292. I will have to look into this further.

Roger Katz commented about Loft Cinemas on Dec 10, 2014 at 7:21 pm

OK – look at the current Street View. The entrance to the left of the main adult shop says “Loft Cinemas” which clearly are an adult movie theatre that is currently open with “six theatres” and “14 mini cinemas”.

Does anyone know how that works? Is the former auditorium all carved up, or maybe the former balcony? Or could it be former office space above the lobby?

If anyone lives in Toronto I’d love to know.
