I believe Deep Throat is the movie that I think tipped the tides into the “modern” porn industry. It’s also sort of “tame” considering what is out there nowadays.
The Patchogue Sunrise Drive-In is being talked about under the UA Movies at Patchogue 13 which is the megaplex that was built on the drive-in site. Interestingly, one of the Multiplex’s auditoriums (the biggest one) is still the Patchogue Sunrise Drive-in’s indoor theater. They built the multiplex onto the old indoor theater. The concession stand is even outside all cemented up.
There’s no seperate entry for the Drive In because the UA Movies at Patchogue IS the Patchogue Drive In.
See here for the Patchogue Drive-In: /theaters/7828/
BTW, I believe that along with the Bay Shore Theatre, the Drive in should really be listed as two words, “Bay Shore”, and the town also as “Bay Shore”, which is the proper spelling. I tried to find these two theaters yesterday under “Bay Shore” and couldn’t find them.
Hahaha. My coworkers must think I am crazy because I am laughing at my computer.
Let’s not forget, “Ball in the Family”, “The Hunchback of Dirty Dames”, and “The Long Ranger”.
Sounds like the first porno I rented when I was a teenager at the video store, which was a great “cinema masterpiece” called, “Bright Lights, Big [fill in a word that rhymes with Cities]”.
Funny how many of these “masterpieces” are plays on real movie names.
The Bay Shore Theatre, in addition to having Bay Shore as two words instead of one should have “Ward & Glynne” as the secondary theater name, as that’s what it opened with. In addition, if just like the Patchogue Theatre Ward & Glynne was what was accross the Marquee originally as built.
Okay, I figured it out. The Bolton Center is the Regent Theater. I will add it as the Bolton Center because that is the name on the marquee when I passen the other day.
I don’t think the Regent is on this site. I tried both Bay Shore and Bayshore. What is the Regent called now? I am confused with the two Bay Shore theaters on Main St. Is this theater or the Regent the “Bolton Center” now?
Which one is the gym, and which one is still a theatere?
That means it was somewhere on the south side of Nesconset Hway and Middle COuntry Rd. Could it have been where the Houlihans Bar and Pizza Uno Chicago Bar and Grill, and that shopping center is now?
This should be listed as the “Bay Shore”, not “Bayshore”. I couldn’t find the theater so almost re-added it because it doesn’t come up under “Bay Shore” (I got the “Ooops message”) when I searched for it on the site.
Bay Shore is two words.
The entry should be changed to Bay Shore, along with the town entry.
It’s confusing because the Zip Code lines for all those towns run right through that intersection. It it was in the Southeast corner or southwest corner of that intersection, it was Nesconset. (I don’t believe it was either of those because there are older streets with homes right nearby. So that leaves north of the intersection. If it was in the northwest corner of that intersection it was in Saint James (a slight chance it was at that location). But if it is where I am thinking it was, it was in the Northeast corner of that intersection, and that is Lake Grove.
I think the same people that run this one run the Movieland of Coram Theater. Does anyone know who runs it? In the Coram section, someone speculated the Coram may be one of the BS Moss houses because of it’s similar “Movieland” name.
That is pretty cool. I have been in that multiplex countless times, and never knew that. I think I had even seen movies in that particular theater. Is it a little bigger than the other theaters? I know exactly where you mean, as I was just on that side of the building a couple months ago (but not in that theater).
As a kid, I saw a few movies at the Indoor Drive In theater, so am happy to know it still exists. I thought it was all torn down when they built the UA Patchogue.
This theater was always a madhouse when it first opened. I guess now that the novelty has worn of about stadium seating (now that other multiplexes have it now too), it is not quite the madhouse anymore, although is still a nice theater. You used to have to come really early, otherwise the movie you wanted to see would be sold out, or you would get stuck in the first row if it wasn’t.
The theater is in the corner of the shopping center and it looks small from the outside. However, the auditoriums aren’t too bad when inside. It’s actually a nice place to see a movie.
I unfortunately never have seen a movie at the Islip, but pass it all the time. I always admire it’s attractive neon marquee, and looks well maintained.
Okay, just the last sentense needs to be removed above. I could have sworn it was converted to stores. It closed as a movie theater in the early 1990’s. The entire shopping center was in decline for years afterwards with the loss of the movie foot traffic, and the supermarket that closed around the same time as the theater. A KFC building stood vacant for years, and the east end of the shopping center was even torn down in the mid 90’s.
In the last few years though the shopping center has made a comeback, and is finally filled up again. This past year the KFC was finally torn down, and a new Wendy’s built in it’s place.
I am glad to hear the theater has at east been restored for live theater.
I knew the theater had to be struggling, completing against the nearby UA Patchogue 13 (which is struggling itself with all the newest multiplexes). The current owners are really making an effort though, and it is a nice little place to see a movie.
Yeah, this was usually not my first choice when seeing a movie. The only time I would go to it was when a movie I really wanted to see was sold out at my “first choice” theater, or the time was inconvenient at my “first choice” theater. You could tell the multiplex was going down years before it closed.
The Smithtown was always a nice place to be able to see a movie you really wanted to see, but didn’t get the time to when the movie was in the regular theaters.
I didn’t mean that lostmemory is adding the UA Smithtown too. That one is not on the site either. If you know a little description for the UA Smithtown, please add it Robert.
Funny you should mention that, as lostmemory is working on adding those. In private email, we were trying to figure out where the Smithtown Drive In was located. He found that it was at the intersection of Rt347 and Rt 25 (near Smithaven mall). Robert, do you know the exact location of the Drive In? He thought it may be where Pep Boys is now.

Does the Regent show movies again now, or is it now a performing arts house or something?

I’m not sure, but I am assuming it’s the same company that built the Movieland Cinemas of Mastic, but not really sure.

Here’s a link to the Sayville’s website. If you click on “Visual Tour” it will give you some photos of the exterior and interior:

Does anyone know where on Main St the East Islip was (east or west Main St), and what is there now?
