It is hoped that during the run of ‘Brief Encounter’ that the two smaller screens will run old black and white movies such as Ealing comedies etc. I think the whole idea and set up is wonderful and i wish it every success.
I think i have some old Sherman stuff i can dig out.
You are 100% spot on about the sound being from horn box on stage. There used to be a dear old man on the stage door called Tom and he let me see it being set up for a late night screening after an evening live performance of ‘My Cousin Rachel’ starring Pat phoenix not long before she became ill. I saw the set up and then ran for my last train to Swansea. (am i showing my age here?)
In the 70s and early 80s they screened late shows of ‘The Exorcist’ many times on a Friday night. I remember the projection not be of the best quality.

Walked past the Lunt a few times in the last few days and they have really cleaned it up and its looks great. There is a great big empty void where HJs once stood.
I saw the movie ‘Broadway-The Golden Age’ here and it was just me and 2 very old ladies in the house. They sat 2 rows in front of me and they talked all the way thru the movie but it was just fine with me because it turned out that these two ladies were old Broadway chorus girls and they knew almost everyone in the movie. They were totally charming and very entertaining, it was better than any DVD commentary could ever be!
It closed very soon after and i have been past it in its new life as a new face less New York building!
The last photo by Lost Memory must be some years old as i used to pass there everyday and that show it looked 8 or 9 years ago, It looks in a pretty sorry state in that picture. I cant imagine how it must look today now its closed and abandoned. I wonder how long it will survive as the last Mecca to close in Hounslow closed this year and has already disapeared into dust.
I saw the Spanish premier of the stage version of ‘Victor/Victoria’ here 2 years ago and it really is a great theatre with a lovely atmosphere despite its size.
This place certianly lost its sparkle around the mid 80s. The owners since then just seem to have no interest in the presentation of the movies or the upkeep of what could be an amazing cinematic experience. Its in the very heart on londons movie district for gods sake and look at it- it looks like some run down ABC cinema in the 80s. I wont go there now.
I think everything should be done to encourage people on here to visit the Hellinger. It truly is a rare but beautiful palace in the middle of NY. I never miss a visit when im over from the UK.
COULD THE BOARD PLEASE ENSURE THAT I DONT GET NOTICES FROM THIS THEATRE LISTING!!!
IT ISNT ON MY ‘REPLY WHEN MESSAGE POSTED’ or ‘MY FAVOURITES’ LIST AND IT COMES UP ALL THE TIME AND IS VERY ANNOYING!
Prior to this stunning renovation and rebuild it was a monstrous auditorium with little if any charm. Cameron has done an amzing job here and beteen Mary Poppins closing and Jersey Boys opens he is doing even more to make this an even better experience. He is doing tremendous work on all the West End houses he owns.
Oct 30th. 2007. At 1.30pm today i flew over it and its still there! Which is more than i can say for the Dominion in Houslow which i passed over minutes later and is now as flat as a car park!
This was an truly abismal place to see a film. Shoeboxes is the word to describe the dirty auditoriums in this rip off complex. I was pleased when it went.
Ive seen many movies at this complex and although, when outside all you see is a 4mtre high sign outside the shopping mall. once youre inside it realy is spectacular. You pay for your ticket and an usher then takes you to the exclusive bar area where you get a drink before another usher takes you to your seat. When you have sat down, two ushers bring a pillow and a blanket and after makeing you feel comfortable you are given a free cocktail as the movie starts. The screens ive been in are of a very decent size with the seats being as big as home sofas there is only about 10 in each row. the presentation is of a very high standard. If in Bangkok -GO! They do late night screenings most nights at around 11pm.
Since i posted the request ive found out i have a trip to Chicago next Friday and i cant tell you how much i appreciate your travel info. Im now looking foreward to a screening sometime in the 3 days im in town. Now i will check whats on. Many, many thanks again. x
How easy is it to get to from downdown? I visit Chicago a few times a year and would love to invest some time in a visit. Simple directions would be great guys, thanks! x

Both these photos were taken after its last rebuild back in the late 1980s. A gorgeous theatre, inside and out.

Woody, what a STUNNING set of photos!
Ive never taken that option on this theatre as i have on so many others. Its very annoying. maybe if i take the option then i wont get bothered.

Tell us more Andy!
I flew over the site into Heathrow last week and the whole area is completly flat. Shame on you Mecca.
What a gorgeous facade with or without the beautiful old marqee. Anty pics available of the auditorium.
