My parents took everybody to see this on my youngest bro’s sixth b-day a week later at River Oaks 1 (later #9) in Calumet City, Il. My Dad would go on to see this another couple of times in it’s theatrical run.
Me, I was born two years later, but I saw it when I was four on my older brother’s VHS recording off HBO. I love it to this day. Without “Die Hard”, there would be no “Under Seige”, “Passenger 57”, “Sudden Death”, or the Corey Haim b classic, “Demolition High”.
To Chicagoians who might see this thread, here’s the expanded release list for Wednesday July 20th, 1988
Arlington Heights: (Cineplex Odeon) Town & Country Mall
Calumet City: (Cineplex Odeon) River Oaks #1
Chicago: (M&R) Dearborn Cinema
Chicago: (Cineplex Odeon) Chestnut Station
Chicago: (M&R) Webster Place
Chicago: (Cineplex Odeon) Nortown
Chicago: (General Cinema) Ford City
Chicago Ridge/Oak Lawn: (Cineplex Odeon) Commons of Chicago Ridge
Forest Park: (Cineplex Odeon) Forest Park Mall
Hillside: (M&R) Hillside Square
Niles: (Cineplex Odeon) Golf Mill
Northbrook: (Cineplex Odeon) Edens
Of Note, this movie along with “Midnight Run” were the first movies to play at the then all-new Webster Place Theater. Happy 20th anniversary, and “yippee ki yay”!
Does anyone know how I would go about in getting the specs for auditorium #1? If I never reopen this place, I want to at least build an auditorium just like it.
Here’s something I found at the forums at filmtech.com
“Digital installations in the DC area are due to start around now .
However The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience will not be screened on any of them.
Christopher Nolan, after going to the trouble of filming sections of the movie on IMAX 15 perf /65mm negative, refuses to have his movie shown this way.
There are rumours from a well placed source that an upcoming 3D feature will also be filmed in IMAX."
Good to know that Mr. Nolan is standing up for actual IMAX/70MM film.
Wow, 15 years already. I was three years old when I saw it with my mom & brothers about two weeks later at the Sony Evergreen. I remember the sound being very, very loud.
It actually opened June 15th 2001. “Tomb Raider”, “Swordfish”, “Atlantis: The Lost Empire”, and “Shrek” were among the first films to play here. It looks just like other Loews Theatres like Crestwood, but this theater does have auditorium 15, which seats 676 and has a screen that’s over 60ft wide or more. #15 would be ideal for a 70MM retrofit.
Is it too late to write letters to the people at Paramount? If not, then we need to get a campaign going.
Jimpiscitelli, I haven’t seen a movie on screens 5 & 6 at the Melrose, but I remember seeing “Hidalgo” on my 14th birthday on screen 4, and that was a huge screen. The projection was so bright, it was almost dizzying in some scenes.
I don’t think the Pickwick has the machinery for 70MM. Come to think of it, I don’t know if the Showplace or Country Club Hills have it ether. But it wouldn’t hurt to retrofit them for 70MM.
I like DLP, but it’s always presented on small screens, and I don’t wanna see Indy 4 on a small screen.
There is a lack of BIG screens here in the Chicago area, but auditorium 15 at the AMC-Loews Country Club Hills is really big. So I would love it if Paramount had them retro-fit #15 for 70MM, and have a special 70MM showing of “Crystal Skull” there. I know it’s wishful thinking, but I can dream, right?
This will be the first “Indiana Jones” movie I’ve seen in a theater, so I don’t wanna see it in a shoebox. River Oaks #9 or McClurg Court would’ve been ideal, but they’re gone now.
I ain’t gonna say I don’t like stadium seating, because I do. But the only thing I don’t like conventional sloped floor seating is that there’s always somebody’s big ‘ol head seating in front of you & the screen. And that just irks me.
Paul, off the top of my head I have a list of movies that played here at one point or another
2/7/86 – F/X
2/21/86 The Hitcher
7/18/86 – Aliens
11/26/86 – Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
4/24/87- Extreme Prejudice
5/1/87 – Malone plus Rage of Honor
6/17/88 – Red Heat
7/20/88 – Die Hard
I have more, but it’ll take me a while to sort through them.
When Cineplex Odeon remodeled it in 1987, theater 1 had a large dark blue, maybe purple colored curtain covering it’s large screen. That’s the main thing I remember about seeing the “Star Wars” re-release in 97.
No, I haven’t gotten the chance to go here yet. I was going to see “I Am Legend” here, but ended up seeing it at the Showplace in Schererville, IN because I was nearby shopping with my parents.
Does anyone know if the theater is still sitting there?

It is now closed again. I think the thing that may have hurt it is the lack of advertising. And it only operated Fri-Sun & holidays.
Damn. Hopefully it won’t be turned into retail & can be used as a cinema again. But remodeled extensively.

I’ve never seen a film in this format (outside of IMAX), but how does DLP compare to 70MM?
Thanks for the info Bob. And say, what sits on the site of Ford City East?
Does anyone know what sits on the site of the old Ford City Cinemas?
3/19/82 – PORKY'S
6/27/86 – RUNNING SCARED
12/12/86 – THE GOLDEN CHILD
7/4/90 – DIE HARD 2
More will follow.
Does anyone know what is the largest auditorium/screen here?
I’m back with more from River Oaks’s grand auditorium #1 (aka #9)
11/16/84 – SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT
11/1/85 – TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.
5/13/88 – FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 7
3/3/89 – LEAN ON ME
More when I go back to the library.

C'mon people, Indy 4 for 70MM!

To any Paramount/LucasFilm spy that may be lurking around here
Please have a 70MM showing of Indy 4 in the Chicago area. These places would be worthy of a wide-screen showing.
The Pickwick in Park Ridge. Auditorium 1 – 1500 seats.
AMC-Loews Country Club Hills in Country Club Hills. Auditorium 15 – 676 seats.
Kerasotes Showplace 12 @ Golf Mill in Niles. Auditoriums 1 & 7 – 460 seats each.
C'mon, give me 70MM!

Here’s an wiki article explaning the super-35mm format
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_35_mm_film
My guess is that it was shot in super-35.
I don’t know for sure, but I hear that Cannes will have a 70MM screening. Don’t know when.

Aek, I believe screen 1 at the Norridge has a really big screen, but I’m not sure because I haven’t been there.
