Went to a 3:35 showing of “Angels and Demons”, and it was worth enjoying. Nearly full house, movie was shown with a few splices but not as blurry projection and a decent pre-show. Hopefully Rockaway gets 3-D for next weekend when “Ice Age 3” plays.
The first two Toy Story movies played at the old AMC in Rockaway, and hopefully the third one will be shown in 3D next year. That’s when 3D movies will be the de facto standard for mainstream audiences, as more theaters will add digital projection that can show stereoscopic imagery. This past weekend, Up became the highest grossing debut for a 3D movie, beating out Monsters vs Aliens, and got the best reviews since “Star Trek”. 3D or not, this movie will still play for a long time and fare better than the kiddie sequels.
Here’s the question…will all three movies be shown back-to-back as one long concert, or will it be shown each day for three days? I hope there’s an intermission betweeen each movie so I can go take a break!!!
At the time, Episode I, adjusted for inflation, became one of the most expensive movies Lucas made and one of a few big-budget Star Wars movies. Yet it turned a profit worldwide, which continued for the next two movies and sold really well on VHS and DVD. Interestingly, Star Wars I came out on VHS and Laserdisc during DVD’s third year…I bought the film on VHS at my local Blockbuster in pan-and-scan and in Dolby Surround sound. Once the movie finally arrived on DVD with extra minutes…it was worth watching again with the surround sound and the very soft picture. I hope the Bluray release improves the movie!!!
Don’t forget the availablity of downloading movies onto a videogame console or high-end computer for watching and paying for it. If you don’t have cash, then sites like Youtube and Hulu offer uncut movies, although there are commercials on those videos and the quality is not HD but suitable for PC use for older computers. As for the DVD format, it will still be in use for recordable data such as movies, photo albums, and music as prices for that stuff go down while Blu-Ray is in its fourth year.
Night at the Museum 2 is playing in blown up IMAX for a few more weeks until Transformers 2 comes out….that movie and the upcoming Harry Potter movie will have select scenes shot in true IMAX (3D for Harry Potter).
I agree. 2k is not as popular as 35mm film or IMAX for that matter…I can’t wait for 4k projection at my local AMC theater so I can see higher than HD picture and sound.

Out of 10 theaters, 4 are digital and 6 don’t. I’m planning on seeing Angels and Demons on Sunday at the theater. Hopefully they won’t ring any fire alarms, splice any reels, or blur the projection!!!!
Speaking of Star Trek, it was shot on regular 35mm film and blown up to regular IMAX and digital IMAX format. It only played for two weeks, but it drew the attention of the media when a celebrity from a little-watched comedy on TV protested against the company for reducing the size of the IMAX screens for multiplex use. Imax quickly responded to the complaints, and hopefully this issue will settle once the new Transformers movie comes out, which will be one of a few movies to show scenes shot in IMAX (the other being Harry Potter 6). What’s the latest on the AMC in Rockaway…is that getting an IMAX? According to lfexaminer.com, they mention Rockaway as getting an IMAX on 6/30/2009, but it incorrectly lists it in NY, not in NJ!!! There is only one AMC Rockaway 16, and not in the Rockaway section of Queens.
According to what I read on Google movies, Up 3D is playing not only in many of the digital Clearviews, but also at the Hawthorne theater and at select AMCs. Hopefully by the time Ice Age 3-D comes out, then I’ll see it in 3D. Also is the IMAX system on track to debut at this theater when TF2 comes out? Pretty soon AMC will need to raise some cash in order to stay alive.
Maybe one day when I’m at New York City if a Yankee game gets rained out, I would ask my dad to take a trip to this theater that he’s been to a couple of times (he saw Apocalypse Now at this theater).
An article in today’s Record incorrectly mentions this theater as being on Route 17….it’s in the business section and this theater is an example of how bad the economy is with lots of empty real estate. BTW, has anyone bought interest in the building?
Most recently, AMC restated its earnings, with three previous quarters of losing money. Hopefully when the economy improves, AMC will make money and not waste it on mini-IMAX theaters.
There’s an article in today’s Record that incorrectly states this theater as an example of abandoned real estate, since it wasn’t abandoned but demolished.
Once the economy improves, then it will happen. In the meantime, I’ll be probably sitting all the way back to the wall and see the movie as sharply as possible.
This is to movie advertising what the Ticketmaster/LiveNation is to the concert business.

If this is succesful, then they’ll do the next movie next year and the final one the year after that.

I saw Star Trek only once at the AMC in Rockaway. I’ll see it again when it comes out on Bluray.

Obama saw Star Trek a few weeks ago….he liked it!!!
I agree. Regal and AMC should follow Clearview and bring local excitement back into the multiplex.
Thank god Ford is doing it and not GM or Chrysler.
I agree. The only Regals I’ve been to are the former Hoyts at the Aviation Mall and the one in South Plainfield.

CHecking advance tickets, no 3-D showtimes for Up. Oh, well….
