Patsy commented about Paramount Theatre on Jan 11, 2006 at 12:57 pm

Since I have previously posted on this Paramount CT link I was wondering if anyone could research the Paramount Theatre that was on Union Street in Concord NC. A recent article that I found on the Carolina Theatre/Charlotte CT link mentioned the former theatre in Concord and that it was being restored. It would include businesses, a restaurant and some residential properties. The Paramount/Concord is listed on Cinema Tour, but no photo.

Kari: I just printed out the links you posted and found it interesting to read and see the video that also mentioned the restoration of the old Paramount Theatre in Concord on Union Street. We have a good friend who lives on Union so the next time we visit him we shall check out the Paramount location!

Kari: Thanks so much for these links. I would appreciate it if you would contact me via my email at at your convenience in regards to the Carolina Theatre. I’m a member of CTPS (Carolina Theatre Preservation Society)with Charlie Clayton, President. He has worked for 10 years to see what was decided upon through the council vote at the recent City Council meeting and we are all very appreciative of their decision and of Charlie’s time and dedication to Saving the Carolina!

Organized: First of all, I love your screen name and I truly loved your commentary on the RCHH Wurlitzer. I’ve never been to RCMH, but I have seen and heard the Mighty Mo at the Fox in Atlanta played by Larry Embury on December 26th of 2005 when the Fox celebrated its 75th anniversary!

I just visited the No More Joy website and found it to be very interesting and very well done. My hat is off to the filmmakers for putting together such a wonderful piece of N.O. movie palace history. Congratulations and I hope that sales soar as proceeds will go to the hurricane relief charities in the N.O. area which is so important now!

I agree as I have my personal email addressed on my profile page and wish others would do the same as there have been times when I would like to contact a particular CT member about additional theatre information or related topic.

GREAT NEWS! I just attended the Charlotte City Council meeting. The sale of the theatre to the Atlanta based development company for $1 million dollars was approved at tonight’s meeting. This will allow CTPS (Carolina Theatre Preservation Society) to begin their work towards restoration of the Carolina. Updates will be given here as progress is made.

Rccker: I guess I do recall making that remark sometime in my CT past and it was probably over multiple exact posts as sometimes happens. I really enjoy reading all of the many RCMH posts as it has a rich history in the Big Apple.

Ed: Thank you for your personal commentary as I was just curious as we have dear Jewish friends, but I don’t believe they have ever been in NYC during the holiday season to see RCMH and the show.

Patsy commented about Garden Theater on Jan 9, 2006 at 4:26 am

Lost Memory: I just read your organ data for the former Garden Theatre. Does anyone know where it is now or if it still exists? John: Weight in if you have any additional information. Since you didn’t mention seeing an organ while at Urban Outfitters I assume there wasn’t one being played while shoppers were browsing like in Philadelphia at the former Wannamaker store. BTW, have you or anyone been to that location to hear the organ that is played? I met a young man 2 summers ago who has played that organ and he was so very proud of that fact and should be. He works for the Riviera Theatre in N. Tonawanda NY which was the hometown of Wurlitzer for many years. In the Riviera is the orginally restored Wurlitzer organ that was used as a demo to customers interested in purchasing one of the world’s finest organs! If I could I’d love to travel back in time and see all of the grand theatres of Lamb and Eberson and Rapp and Rapp of the 20’s in their prime and grand opening nights!

Thank you…I think! What a well written commentary except for the box label you found in the balcony. So sad that that age group would even consider walking in that store and buying something as if to say what you have done Urban Outfitters is okay with us! I recall reading on CT about a former theatre in Seattle that is now a Banana Republic so it would be interesting to read someone’s onsite commentary of that store, too. The exterior facade of the former Garden Theatre makes such a statement and I’m so disappointed that when I was in Charleston and drove by I didn’t realize what it had been so didn’t stop to investigate! The facade really made an impression with me and I knew that it had been something, but wasn’t even thinking of it having been a theatre as I had just visited the Riviera and the American so didn’t realize there had been another theatre nearby. BTW, when did Urban Outfitters come to Charleston and set up business? And if I had been there the day you stopped I would have had to control myself for wanting to make a remark about what used to be there at that King Street location!

Robby from Charlotte: If you read this and are interested, the City Council will be having their weekly meeting on Monday at 600 E. 4th Street at 7 to discuss the future of the Carolina Theatre. We plan to attend and hope others who want to see this historical theatre become the jewel in Queen Charlotte’s crown attend this important meeting, too. The issue is #12 on the docket and can be read on the City Council website.

And I, too, would be interested to know if this store has “converted” other theatres. Hope the answer is…not many!

If you go to www.urbanoutfitters.com you can click on the State of South Carolina and the Garden Theatre location will come up as it is the only Urban Outfitters store listed for SC. I wonder how they reconfigured the interior to accommodate the store’s layout?

I do hope that someone can post a photo of the Garden Theatre as it looks today with Urban Outfitters in that location.

John: Long time no speak, but here I am to say hello. Hope you had a wonderful holiday season. I can’t believe the Garden Theatre is now a retail space as it had such a rich theatrical history with Al Jolson performing on its stage in the 20’s! When I was there I recall driving by the building and at the time didn’t realize what it had been so missed the opportunity to stop and go inside.
