Martin: Sounds like a very sad scenario to a once quaint art deco theatre in rural West Virginia. Are thoughts are prayers are with the miner’s families and the lone survivor.

And I, too, would be interested to know if this store has “converted” other theatres. Hope the answer is…not many!

If you go to www.urbanoutfitters.com you can click on the State of South Carolina and the Garden Theatre location will come up as it is the only Urban Outfitters store listed for SC. I wonder how they reconfigured the interior to accommodate the store’s layout?

I do hope that someone can post a photo of the Garden Theatre as it looks today with Urban Outfitters in that location.

John: Long time no speak, but here I am to say hello. Hope you had a wonderful holiday season. I can’t believe the Garden Theatre is now a retail space as it had such a rich theatrical history with Al Jolson performing on its stage in the 20’s! When I was there I recall driving by the building and at the time didn’t realize what it had been so missed the opportunity to stop and go inside.

I really enjoyed seeing the Christmas Spectacular for the first time in Charlotte, but would have preferred seeing it for the first time in NYC at ‘the hall’! Though I do feel the live Nativity was a bit over the top it was a wonderful presentation of the true meaning of Christmas for all Christians. Yet I do wonder if many Jewish people stay for the final act?

The Koehler Brewery has a long and rich history in the City of Erie and it is sad to see this piece of history eventually come down though certain artifacts such as the Koehler crest were taken off the building to be saved and replaced on a new building that will be constructed on that site. If you wish to “talk Erie” more, you can find my email on my profile page.

dyban: Enjoyed looking at the Warner of Erie PA. I attended the Home for the Holidays musical with the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra and guest singer/tv anchor, Amanda Post during the holidays and it was wonderful. Your ‘old timey factory’ photos are interesting and are of the former Koehler Brewery on State Street.

Brian: Thanks for the above site with photos. I’ve been to Sarasota FL and toured the Ringling Estate which is a MUST-SEE for anyone who is interested in the Ringling name and all that it represents.

Is this video wall that you all talk about just at RCMH or is perhaps a smaller version of it taken on the road tours? Also, in Charlotte there were 18 Rockettes and so I wonder how many are on the RCMH stage….twice that number?

Ed: Oh yes, the RCMH Christmas show tours and has been touring for several years. I saw the show on Dec. 30th at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte. It was my first time to see the show and when the Rockettes first appeared on stage a tear fell among my cheek as I had waited all my life to see them, in person! Though if I had had a choice I would have chosen to see them for the first time on stage at RCMH with a live orchestra! Sorry about your Rockettes meeting up with your dog!

And whose idea was it to put in this video wall? Sounds too high-tech to me.

I hope to someday tour and see a show at Radio City, but many CT members/New Yorkers who have a history of going there over the years seem to express many changes that have occurred over the years. I guess with time comes change and not always for the good though there will always only be one Radio City Music Hall and it is a special theatre. Santa brought me the Dept 56 RCMH this year and I plan to leave it on display all year long as I just love it. I didn’t get the 4 kicking Rockettes that come separately, but may sometime. Dept. 56 also offers the Ed Sullivan Theatre.

And glad to read that the restored organ is now in the Disney owned theatre, El Capitan in LA.

What is located on the former Fox Theatre site now? An office complex or a parking lot?

Tom: Nice to read that the Disney Corp. was responsible for placing the former Fox Theatre/SF organ in the El Capitan.

Is there a photo of this theatre’s restored organ? I just learned of its prior theatre location in SF through the book, Cinema Treasures and while visiting the CT Fox Theatre link.

Bryan: Your Nov. 29, 2003 post with link to a b/w photo of the Fox facade still standing is very very sad to view and the preservationists back then certainly dropped the ball and let the wrecking ball swing!

Then on page 166 there is an old ad entitled “TWIN'EM!” The company is the Forest Bay Construction Corp.located in Woodmere NY with the phone number,516-295-0099. I wonder if this company is still in existence? I’m sure they are not still ‘twinning’! Any comments will be ‘entertained’!

I just finished sitting down and viewing my copy of Cinema Treasures and was appalled by the demolition of this Lamb Fox theatre in 1963! The ornate front facade is clearly seen in the book on page 56 and then in the book on page 136 the devastating demolition! Shame! shame!

The Warner relative is Cass Warner who wrote Hollywood Be Thy Name. She is the granddaughter of one of the Warner brothers. I have a signed copy of her book, but haven’t read it yet.

I just now read your post on the Warner Crest topic. I haven’t been able to research much about these historical crests, but am still very much interested! Even a Warner relative couldn’t help me much, which surprised me.
