I saw Sound of Music here in the fall of ‘78. I believe as well that this theater held the original roadshow Dallas release of the film.
In the lobby there was a large advertisement for Animal House at another theater.
SOM was so crowded that the person next to me thought she had come to the wrong theater and was going to unfortunately see Animal House instead.

Movies today are as good as they ever were and anybody who doesn’t think so should just stay home and count their DVDs.
And nobody better dare criticize War of the Worlds and its great director who makes wonderful, heartdriven, literate, consumately masterful films. As voted on this website he is the second greatest director ever!
And that Tom Cruise! Did Gary Cooper or Jimmy Cagney ever care about post partum depression or hyperactive children? And did they ever publically jump up and down on a couch about it? Movie stars back then didn’t care about issues. Only the size and placement of their billing!!
Did Irene Dunne ever cut up with the Vietcong? Thank God we live in a world with Jane Fonda who wants to tell people that war is wrong!

Great photos Robert.
Concerning the boxing image. The screen does not seem huge to me. Was this the size of the 35mm screen pre Vistavision-cinemascope?
So if you were in the balconey what did you see if anything? Was it hard to concentrate on an image so small in a house so enormous?

Chips not only was the last roadshow at the Palace it was its penultmate film.
I wouldn’t mind seeing films back at the Palace it meant displacing Magic Kingdom E ticket attractions and jukebox musicals.

What about the great casting of Capucine? One of the most beautiful women to grace the screen at the Music Hall.

GMC used to get a lot of TV play in the 70’s and I always thought Clark was wonderful and O'Toole very moving. Maybe Herbert Ross' best film.
And then there’s Sweet Charity another terrific ‘69 film musical.
There, you have 3 big fat late 60’s musical floppos which killed off the film musical.
And each one is a gem.

I saw the roadshow Paint Your Wagon in 6 track stereo at the Warner Cinerama during the Broadway on Broadway festival in ‘78.
It was absolutely sensational. The late 60’s musical often get a very bad rap. But some that were failures are really good and far exceed anything that came after.

For me nothing beats the Music Hall but on this one I’m with Warren(though Dunne and Coburn are two of my favorites.) Is Under 21 shown on TCM at 8 in the morning or is it lost to the ages?

Shane has a big Latin American stage show(makes sense) and its kicked off with Gilbert and Sullivan?!!!

You have a complete Arts and Leisure from 68?!!!
Nothing is like the real paper, I wonder if these are obtainable on E bay or is this just too arcane.
By the way I wonder what was the size of the screen for West Side Story here. I have never seen this film in real 70mm as it has not been shown here in NY probably since it left the Rivoli in ‘63.

This must be an ad from the Bergen Record. Saw BITP with my family at the 303 Drive in which is featured in the ad(children under 12 free.)Wanted to see Hawaii which was playing at the Nyack I believe (we passed it as Julie was serving tea to Max somewhere in New England.)Saw it eventually at the Pascack in Westwood. This obviously was not a roadshow hit as by the summer of ‘67 it was everywhere.

If you go to the next page of the above link you see the ad for the post Criterion showcase reissue of My Fair Lady in ‘71 which says in Super Panavision 70. I think we could safely assume that this is false advertising.

A number of people seem to be disappointed with this summer film program. Especially after the Paramount.

I believe this is the theater that became a Paramount house for its more prestigious product(Wings, Applause, Design For Living)rather than for the hoi poloi movie palace crowds across the street at the Paramount.
Does anyone have an interior photo of this one? Also what was the capacity?

Those packed houses in the evening that BOB talks about I can’t even imagine. And they weren’t even holiday shows! Boy had things changed by the 70’s.
I found a program for Feb ‘33 of the moveover The Sign of the Cross.
The fourth segment of the stage show featured a Roman Colosseum setting.Opening with a march into the arena, the Ballet Co in a Bacchanale, a Gladiator plastique(acrobats or dancers?) a chariot race, and then a finale with the Rockettes as Gladiators.
Can you imagine?

There seems to be some confusion between Robert’s photo and Benjamins comment’s. The blue interior of the photo is what the theater was like when I was attending it and it was the dreariest of settings. Yet Benjamin extolls this design. Then claims the photo is of its recent redecoration and not very attractive.
But this is exactly what I remember from the 70’s to the early 90’s!
I don’t believe the theater is like this now(at least I hope not.)
So Benjamin exactly what period are you refering to?

Mr. Billion was pulled after a couple of weeks as the Music Hall Easter show(who in the world chose it in the first place? Perhaps some future Cablevision execs?)and replaced with some Disney film about mining mules I think. I saw part of this with a very empty house and then there was a stage show which seemed to be produced with the production budget of The Fantasticks.

When it was in its blue period I thought it one of the ugliest houses on Broadway. I have no idea what it looks like now but I’d like to know what it looked like before.

I started collecting Variety in 70 and loved looking at the Times Square and Music Hall grosses. As well as looking at the seating capacities of all the downtown movie palaces in the great American cities other than New York and imagining what they looked like.
My parents having no idea what treasures lay within eventually threw them out.
I’ll never forget the horror I experienced one day finding my father painting a room with an issue being used to cover the floor. What in the world was he thinking?

So does this mean that for most of its existence the great boxes and proscenium were covered and that the auditorium as presented in The Best Remaining Seats was only visible from ‘27 to the mid 30’s?
