Is Larry Miller (that crazy guy in Utah wouldn’t run Brokeback Mountain or Zach and Miri Make A Porno) involed with Cinemark? Because that sounds like his policy- family-friendly means lots of violence but no sex.

Silly me, that should say “not really a big fan”.

KingBiscuits
KingBiscuits commented about Redstone to possibly sell NA on Dec 7, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I’ve never been to a Regal but I’m really a big fan of them from reading about their practices. I like AMC and I’ve never been to a Cinemark (I live in a Wehrenberg and formely Dickinson dominated market but I’ve been to a few AMC theatres) but it seems like Regal will be the favorite since they’ve bought rivals in National Amusements’s key markets such as United Artists.

KingBiscuits commented about Redstone to possibly sell NA on Dec 6, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I’m guessing that Regal will be the favorite to buy National Amusements since they seem to eat up the older chains.

And I think that Cinemark and Carmike should merge just so people don’t get them confused.

Something tells me that this was a theatre run by the Temple.

KingBiscuits commented about 3D sports could be next big thing on Dec 4, 2008 at 10:14 pm

No wonder why it was a closed event: it was a Chargers/Raiders game! Have it been the Patriots or the Giants playing, it would have been huge news.

I also remember that last year, one of the NBA Finals games was screened in 3-D in Cleveland at the Quicken Loans Arena to rave reviews.

Meanwhile, the one sport I’d love to see in 3-D is wrestling. It’s all about gimmicks so why not include a gimmick that works?

I wish I were in Los Angeles instead of Springfield, Missouri. You know, I’d pay to watch every single one of them if I were there.

KingBiscuits commented about Marcus Theatres installs 12th UltraScreen on Dec 3, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Now all that they need to do is drop their XpanD project and actually invest in REAL-D (I’ve never been to a Marcus theatre but I’ve read terrible reviews about their REAL-D knockoff).

Phantasm and Every Which Way But Loose. That’s one interesting double feature.

KingBiscuits commented about Halsted Twin Outdoor Theatre on Dec 3, 2008 at 7:05 pm

They probably weren’t getting enough cars to run the same film on four screens. Running the film on one screen likely cut operating costs.

KingBiscuits commented about Disney resigns with IMAX on Dec 2, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Eagle Eye was presented theatrically in 2.40 while the IMAX Digital screens are 1.85, so the film would need be presented letterboxed unless cropping or open-matting (assuming that it was a Super 35 film) were done.

I’d guess Yes Man. Mann is real big on the Warner Bros. titles.

KingBiscuits
KingBiscuits commented about Disney resigns with IMAX on Nov 25, 2008 at 4:35 pm

They should have done this a bit earlier, mainly for Wall-E. Wall-E was designed for a 70mm look and IMAX would have really shown off its space opera feel but since no deal between Disney and IMAX existed, the film only came out in regular formats (35mm and DLP).

antben, that black guy you refer to as was the late, great Gregory Hines. The actor/tap dancing extraordinare also appeared in White Nights, The Cotton Club and Tap (written and directed by the original Michael Myers, Nick Castle), among others.

KingBiscuits commented about TCL Chinese Theatre on Nov 23, 2008 at 9:10 pm

The Chinese should have attempted to get Che instead of The Landmark. A true epic in a roadshow release should be getting the deluxe treatment in one of Los Angeles’s premiere houses instead of a megaplex with small auditoriums.

However it’s getting the Ziegfeld in New York, one of that city’s last premiere houses.

That’s somewhat interesting that the Rutger Hauer Zatoichi update “Blind Fury” actually ran. I thought that it never ran in New York.

KingBiscuits commented about Astor Theatre on Nov 21, 2008 at 6:23 am

The theatre’s marquee (in archive footage) recently had a small appearance in The Express. The film showing was a reissue of Stalag 17 (the scene takes place in 1961).

KingBiscuits commented about First 20 screen theatre to close on Nov 19, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I wonder how much the theatre will go for when it’s put up for sale. From looking at the pictures, it could make a good second-run theatre with alternative programming on the side.

KingBiscuits
KingBiscuits commented about Levittown Theatre on Nov 19, 2008 at 9:18 am

The theatre actually closed in the late 1990’s apparently since the New York Times listed times as late as 1996. At that point, they were playing Indian films.

The theatre also had the Long Island exclusive of Reservoir Dogs in 1992. I believe that ran it for over a month.

KingBiscuits commented about The growing scarcity of quality 35 mm prints for classic film screenings on Nov 16, 2008 at 9:38 pm

I feel for you, Newt. In the area where I live, there is no respect for the arts and those same people run the state government so spending on the arts is considered wasteful spending. In fact, lots of those same people will consider arts as satanic (I wouldn’t be surprised if they were Fred Phelps people). Also, these people will also cut arts spending in schools but won’t cut the more wasteful in spending cheerleading programs. Not only is that wrong but it limits the role models and job opportunities in young and adolescent females.

I would encourage that we should get the state and city governments to help the arts before it is too long. I’m considering trying to get our new governor-elect to pass a bill that would bring film production to the state. Not only does it help the arts but it also promotes the state and it boosts the area’s income. But it would get voted down by the same people who find the arts wasteful spending but not electric chairs or taking money from oil companies.
