Too bad “Grindhouse” isn’t playing at this theater; The Ziegfeld never was a grindhouse, just a first class cinema that withstood the test of time and weather to be the sole survivor in the Big Apple.

On which days the theater isn’t packed? I’d guess the weekdays (save for fridays, wednesdays, and when a big movie premiere is held). Also, how is traffic near the theater? Considering it’s in NYC, it’s gridlocked!!!

When Spiderman 3 opens in Rockaway, it will mark the webslinger’s return to Rockaway since the first one came out at the Outer Six during the theater’s last year. That movie was the last summer blockbuster that the theater ran before closing its doors in late 2002 to make room for a big Best Buy. As for this coming weekend, looks like there won’t be any movies playing on multiple screens, with “Grindhouse” out of the picture. Looks like the theater will do poorly this weekend and the weekend after next before all the tickets for Spiderman get sold out. By the way, how many screens will this film be played on? The last movie to play on many screens there was “300”, which was a great movie to enjoy there. Hopefully it will be digital.

that’s good. Even if Clearview gets spun off by Cablevision, the theater will still be alive well into the same timeframe as the theater’s current attraction, Meet the Robinsons.

I agree with you. When does Clearview’s contract with the theater expire?

How about the Senator? It’s still one of the last great movie houses in the Northeast with a single screen…I know the Chatham theater is the only single screen theater left in Morris County (compared to the 16-plex in Rockaway)..how does that compare with the Ziegfeld?

What’s the next movie that the theater will play after Dirty Dancing ends on May 18th? I guess it’s Shrek the Third, and then Pirates 3 the following week since the series played at that theater twice. Too bad Spidey isn’t coming to this theater since the chain’s nearest theater in that area, the Chelseas, will play this movie.

Just went to see “Grindhouse” in theater #15, and I was pleased with the presentation. Bass was good, projection was great, and the sound was good. Audience reaction was excellent. I went with my cousin, and he enjoyed the experience. Some of the audience during “Death Proof” booed at the fake missing reels, thinking that the theater cut stuff out of the film. The next movie I plan on going to see is “Spider-Man 3” (the first two I saw in Mansfield in Hackettstown). Hope they install digital projection by the time it opens or else I have to deal with plain old 35mm projection. As for digital projection, is Dirty Dancing going to play in Rockaway in May? It seems that the same system that AMC uses for it digital pre-show will be used to show that classic movie.

that sounds cool, seeing old surviving hollywood actors and actresses at an old movie theater.

That’s cheaper than the regular price at the theater, though it’s not as cheap as the Succasunna classics (hopefully I’ll see “The Goonies” there with my cousins in a few weeks).

I heard that there was police activity on Franklin Ave. When I used Google maps, the business was a burger place near E. High St., just blocks from the long-gone business. On the WCBS traffic site, it mentioned that a sign was falling; luckily, I heard on the traffic channel from Cablevision that the crew safely removed the sign. This is another reason while Franklin Avenue is decaying in the 21st century. First, the theater. Now, an old burger joint. BTW, what became of the former staff that worked at the theater years before it closed? I knew that there was a young lady who worked there near the main auditorium. And what’s up with the building? It’s been nearly a year since the last comment.

Sounds like good news…I haven’t been to the Christmas show in nearly five years!!! They should do spectaculars on other holidays besides Christmas and Easter, such as Halloween, 4th of July, and Thanksgiving. As for movies, all of the three Cablevision-owned landmarks in NYC (The Ziegfeld Theater, MSG, and RCMH) all have shown movies in the past. The last movie that MSG showed was Godzilla (1998) during its gala premiere in NYC. MSG, before Cablevision took over, was owned by the former parent company of Paramount, which divested its movie theater business a few years before being taken over by G+W. The last show I went to at the hall was “Celebrity Jeopardy” late last year. It was really good.

What’s the status on the new theater? If the theater opens next month as scheduled, what business would replace the aging complex?

The address should be Route 206 and 24, not 204. I’ve been to this theater twice in the past few years, first to see “Collateral” in one of the main four auditoriums when it opened during the summer of 2004, and the second time during the weekend when “Cars” came out last year in the two back auditoriums. Both were smaller than the average Clearview Cinema and resemble more like the Allwood Sixplex (which is also owned by Clearview). They’re not as profitable as the other Clearview theaters around Morris and Warren counties, yet they play a good mix of family, art-house, and blockbuster fare in a busy rural shopping center located not too far from the turkey farms.

They should put a huge crown next to the REGAL sign, because Regal’s logo is a crown!!!

moviebuff82 commented about Island 16 - Cinema de Lux on Apr 7, 2007 at 3:54 am

One reason why is that kid friendly movies have loud surround sound and that the larger auditoriums (with their big screens) can hold lots of kids and their families as opposed to smaller ones. This is the case with smaller multiplexes like the Allwood Sixplex, where a kid’s movie would be played in the four other auditoriums that don’t have digital sound (e.g., Tarzan in theater 3, Hercules in theater 4). Newer theaters, such as the AMC in Rockaway, NJ, do show family movies in their large to medium large screens (e.g., Night at the Museum and Happy Feet) to accommodate the crowds. As for that incident at the Long Island theater, that is quite a rare occasion.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Apr 1, 2007 at 11:43 am

It’s been nearly a month since I’ve been to the AMC (last movie I saw was the one mentioned before two posts ago)…so I finally went to see “300” with my dad in theater #7, located next to one of the two bigger screens, #8. Presentation was very good, with the occasional white line near the left of the wide screen as well as some minor splotches (not the red ones), given the fact that this film has played here for nearly a month. Sound was very good from nearly all channels, only the front right and center rear surround channel was out (left, center, and right and left surrounds as well as the subwoofer were active); it was the same issue when I saw the previous movie on that same screen. Hopefully AMC fixes this problem.

Great news!!! Digital projection will come to Succasunna in the form of Disney Digital 3D (aka Real D), when “Meet the Robinsons” comes out on March 30th. I hope they keep the digital projection system so that future movies can be shown in the regular 2d format. Parsippany will also get this format, too. Don’t know if the larger Rockaway theater will show this movie in 3d, but we’ll wait and see!!!

I agree with you. Look at the Rockaway theater; since the theater opened, traffic around the mall has increased going to that exit, with backups as far as a few miles. BTW, will the new theater offer digital projection? It would be nice to see Garden State Plaza’s new addition to the mall offer state of the art sound and picture, along with comfy seats and excellent food!!!
