My second experience at RCMH was seeing the Christmas show back in 1989 or ‘90. I see from more recent photos that the auditorium has lots of audio and visual equipment hanging from the rafters and destroying the view of the magnificent architecture of the space. If this “stuff” appears only as needed for special events, ok. I’d hate to see it there were I to return to see the Christmas show or some similar event.
Thank you Ken, Ross and Stephen. With my wifes next paycheck, from none other than Radio City, a Christmas present for me.
A few years ago, Andreas Fuchs and I wrote a new chapter, revised the old book, created new theater pages, and then a new publisher came in to MBI and killed the new edition just before it went to press. Cost cutting at its finest. Thus, there are no revised versions of the book on the docket. It is now officially out of print but the CTA has copies for sale and there are some tattered used ones for sale in other outlets.
MARK; The ‘Cinema Treasures’ book is available at its published retail price $40.00 + p&p from the UK, from the Cinema Theatre Association
Hi Ross. Just a question, and I think its on topic, is the Cinema Treasures book still in print? Any ideas where to get it? Ive checked big and small book stores, with no luck. Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks, Al. The book was a true labor of love. It means a lot to me that you enjoyed it.
Love the Roxy book, Ross Melnick.
I didn’t know the Rockettes predated Radio City Music Hall until I read your book.
No problem at all, Ed! I didn’t want anyone to think that their content or photos would ever be removed by us.
Also, per the issue of off-topic comments, I rarely respond to these kinds of issues or even small disagreements on the site. But my inbox is filling up with angry comments about some of the behavior lately and it forces me to have to deal with it.
I love this site and I love all of our users but I hate the petty personal stuff. The site has been online for thirteen years and I used to be much more tolerant of disagreements, but time is a precious commodity these days and I like to spend it on the positive and not the negative.
Happy Thanksgiving and please keep it on topic, even if I just violated that policy here.
Hey Ross… I probably should have been clearer in my comments – I didn’t mean to infer that anyone at CT was removing Chuck1231’s comments and photos. I actually assumed that it was Stephen (or some other family member with the account password) who had been removing them. Just found it puzzling, since this site obviously meant something to him, that the contributions he left behind here, would be removed in the wake of his passing.
Anyway, I understand these off topic posts will be deleted – and rightfully so. Just wanted to make clear that I did not intend to suggest any favoritism. Apologies for appearances to the contrary!
I am, however, removing off topic comments made on this page. As you know, we rarely step into these matters but it’s time to remind everyone — and I mean everyone — that off-topic comments will be removed without favoritism. Please keep this discussion related to RCMH.
As for our longtime member, Chuck Van Bibber, his presence is deeply missed and his contributions to the site are everlasting.
Just to be clear, Ed, no one at Cinema Treasures has removed a single comment or photo from Chuck’s account.
Steven, its a shame some people have no respect for others. Ive always enjoyed your fathers comments and photos. My father was a long time projectionist here in New Jersey. He would have loved this site, but sadly passed away 20 years ago. I am sorry to hear of your dads passing.
Steven, I’m sorry too about your father. What was his name here?
Stevenvb… I’m very sorry to hear of your loss, and my thoughts are with you and your family. Indeed, as it has been commented elsewhere, CT will miss your father’s contributions. It’s a shame that his legacy of comments and contributed photos seem to be in the process of being systematically eradicated from CT.
There was a problem with e-mail notifications for a couple of weeks, which has now been fixed.
I’m not getting the emails either. I just dropped by to post a picture and saw all the responses….
The interior “proscenium” was put in 3 years ago for the content from the digital projectors. We had to re-lens the film projectors because it shrunk the image size (yes, the picture was even bigger than it is now). The video walls are what they are. They look like crap close up but it’s good enough I guess. I’m very surprised about the theater not being cleaned well from the show before. They usually are very good about that.
I went to see the Christmas Show on Friday November 8. The good things first: 1) the show is impeccably done and is up to the usual standards, 2) the organ was used before the show and during it, 3) the new number “Snow” was quite nice, 4) the hideous speakers have been removed. Overall it was an excellent experience.
Now the bad things: 1) the theater had not been cleaned since the earlier show. There was popcorn everywhere. I complained. 2) there were hawkers selling stuffed animals and urging that customers get their photos taken with a Rockette—very tacky, 3) the organists play exactly the same thing every year. They should listen to Leibert’s Christmas albums, 4) there is an “interior” proscenium fit into the larger one that diminishes the size of the opening, 5) the video game number is horrible. Let us hope that it disappears soon.
In spite of the things I didn’t like, I’m deeply grateful that the theater still exists and is in excellent condition. It really is beautiful. I’m also grateful that the organ has not been trashed and that it is still used.
Why am I not getting comments via e-mail
Hello rcdt55b and vito, and others. Saw the Christmas show last night. As you all know my wife is a wardrobe dresser there. A few things. One, I came in a few minutes late and missed the trailer for the spring show. Came in on the dancing bears. My seats were 2 rows from the stage. I am assuming the scene with the bus and the video of NYC in the background was on a video wall correct? You could clearly see the seams between each panel. This bugged me because I set these up at the arena in Newark NJ and we are always careful not to let this happen. I also still cannot stand the video game part of the show. Has nothing to do with Christmas. The snowballs were cool, but I can see where if one fell to the audience, someone would be seriously hurt. Finally, the Nativity was spot on perfect as it should be.
No it doesn’t rcdt, guess we will have to see how it looks to form an opinion. I knew the use of film was to good to be true….oh well.
No premieres in the near future. Vito, they may be bringing in more digital projectors for the spring show. It looks like they will not be using film now for the spring show. This is what we heard yesterday from someone. Info does not travel well to us hear so that may still change. The trailer for the spring show is 90 seconds and being shown on the 3D wall. It looks amazing on the wall…….if you like the look of content on a cinderblock wall with cold colors……..makes no sense at all.
Any more movie premieres soon?
rcdt Please tell us more about the trailer is it on film? and is that why you wrote a while back that more projectors would be used this year? Thanks
I’m going to be there this Friday morning for the first performance.
Didn’t see any during spring show rehearsals. “Snow” was only thing added for Christmas Show.
