The address is wrong, the entrance Road was off Oceanic Drive,where the photo was taken,and the exit Road was off Bold Park Road. The Drive-in site was used for viewing Halley’s comet in 1986. The entrance Road,and exit Road and ramps,(and bases of snack bar/bio box, ticket booth/s,and screen still there,next to the Town of Cambridge Shire offices. I think it is planed to include the Drive-in site in the Town of Cambridge(or Bold Park) heritage trail?
Club X showed there after the Savoy theatrette closed (I think late 80’s/early 90’s). It have have been showing adult films at the same time as well before that too? Club X used to called barbarellas.
Barry,i wasn’t at the auction(i was only about 2 and a half then). I got the sign and flyer/program much in a differant auction/s in the 1990’s i think? I think the auction was mentioned in the West Australian at the time(I think there was a bridge of sighs repicia in there somewhere that was chipped away and sold in (small?) pieces i think,what a pity?!).
The Bencubbin Drive-in theatre was located in the southern end of Monger Street,Bencubbin. The Drive-in opened on June 11,1965 with the film Bachelor of hearts,supported by selected shorts and a cartoon(not named.). The Drive-in closed about(1980?),partly dismantled in 1980,and then demolished(completely?

After the Metro theatre was demolished in February 1972,the site was used to build a the(head office?) of Perth building society(later Challenge Bank,now Westpac). I believe that during the demolishon,there one of the beams in the theatre building was hard to dislodge. There is a bas-relief that survived from the demolishon gracing the walls of Exit Nightclub(in Stirling Street,Northbridge),pictured in the book,Stage Screen and Stars(page 24).
There was an auction in the Ambassadors Theatre a few days after it closed! The Rooftop Movies is not the only operating cinema in the city,there is also Cinema paradiso,Moonlight outdoor picture gardens(in Kings Park,part of the year),Club X(formally barbarellas)after moving from the Savoy theatre to Barrack Street,and a picture gardens in East Perth(near Plain Street,across from Langley Park(I think?).),i don’t remember the name of the place,it only opened last year(I think?).

I have an old Ambassadors Theatre price sign,it is pre-decimel(pounds,schillings and pence and(entertainment?) tax,on both sides(double sided sign),i have no idea how old it is,but is before the change of currency in(february?)1966. I also have a flyer/program of diamonds are forever which may have been from the Ambassador Theatre’s final screening?

There was two theatre organs in the Metro Theatre(I think of the organs might have been in Wesley Church(Perth) before being installed in the theatre?). One of the organs is now in Hale college(Wembley Downs),the other organ is now in the Karrinyup Comminity Centre.

According to the Chips wiki episode guide for (season 1,episode 8-green thumb burglar.),the drive in theatre was also used in(season 3,episode 11-return of the supercycle.),but that episode guide says that was Sepulveda drive in theatre. In (season 1,episode 8.),you briefly see just before the police chase enters the drive in theatre lot,you briefly see the sign for the Long Beach(drive in?).

The Sun Picture Gardens was seen briefly on the Australian tv version of Guinness Book of Records(in 2004?),mentioning it’s world record. the Picture Gardens also appeared on Postcards W.A.,and Getaway.
The Sun Picture Gardens appear at the begining of the Australian movie Bran Nue Dae(set in 1969),the gardens may also have appeared in the background of the Australian children’s television series Lucky Star in one or more episodes filmed at Broome!!

The inside of the Savoy Theatre is still there,accessible from the door at the back(fire exit?),only the front door(and staircase?)are gone!
