The glass windows were to be replaced with walls. One-Sheet boxes were mounted on the walls where the windows used to be. I don’t know why they remodeled the way they did, but the glass went away. Solid walls took their place.

Why did they want to break the glass?

I worked at the Sherman Oaks Cinemas when Neal Stolberg was the manager. I also remember when, in 1984, the twin was closed for the extensive remodel. Large, thick glass windows lined the front of the building. When conventional efforts failed to break the glass, Neal brought out his hand-gun and shout out all of the glass windows so that construction could continue. Those were good times.

The Sherman Oaks Twin opened in 1975. In 1984 the theatre was shut down for 90 days for an extensive remodel. The THX was added to the auditoriums at that time, platters replaced the changeover system, and 70 MM was added in Cinema #1. The theatre always offered the best sound system in the area.

Each auditorium had 476 seats. The remodeled theatre was designed by a gentlemean named Bob Luchetti.

My understanding is that the site is going to now be a BEST BUY store.

The triplex opened in March of 1977 and was in operation until the Northridge Earthquake; as already stated by Bill.

Because of the location of complex, it was frequented by many actors and industry people.

The Sherman Oaks 1 & 2 have now been demolished. I drove by the site and saw nothing but rubble from the former theatre sitting on the ground.

This theatre was operated by AMC when GCC was sold to AMC. AMC closed the theatre when they sold the 5-plex to Pacific Theatres.

This theatres address is 4500 Van Nuys Blvd., the former triplex’s address would be on Milbank Street. Which is now operated by Pacific Theatres.
