I can’t believe any local would take in a Projectionist trained by a non-union projectionist. And this in New Jersey!Don’t believe it.Mike local 629.

I worked concession/usher at the AMC Inner Theatre one summer while in high school, and then worked as an usher at this theatre during my first year in college. I was hired when they were just about to open and construction was to supposed to complete and was behind schedule. The opening was rushed and not all screens were complete. I remember carpeting not being finished too.

Its interesting to hear about the sound complaints. I’m particularly aware of them, because there was a dispute between the owner and the construction company over the way that the walls separating the theaters were built or insulated, which allowed sound to bleed through, that I believe led to a significant delay in the construction company being paid after it opened.

Around the corner from the ticket sales is a window that faces the concession stand. It used to be a one-way mirror from the manager’s office.

One of the coolest parts of this theatre was/is the projection area on the second floor. The door to the stairs that lead up to it are acros from the concession stand and near the manager’s office.

I remember the projection area being a “T” hallway with all the projectors openly visible. The audio was CD-based, which from reading elsewhere on this site sounds like it might have been DTS. They were a non-union projectionist shop, which meant that you could gain experience and then try to join the union. I only ever remember one projectionist, who would wonder into the theatre every now and then and then disappear up those stairs. The managers also did projection work, as needed. I really wanted to become a projectionist, but the opportunity only came as I was leaving to focus on school, and sadly couldn’t pursue it.

The son of the owner was a manager there. As was a previous manager of their Succasunna theatre. Both nice guys. I ran into the owner’s son somewhere, after I left and after they had sold the theatre. I remember him saying that they left the theatre business and went into the technology business.

Aspen Extreme and Dumb & Dumber are the earliest movies that I remember there. I remember closing every night for weeks when the last movie to “get out” was Pulp Fiction and watched the last hour of it so many times that I was able to tell how certain sequences of the movie were shot and edited.

It was probably the best, if least paid, job I’ve ever had.

Will Clearview upgrade all of the screen to digital 4k?

moviebuff82

recently clearview raised the prices on tickets by a quarter (this affects all theaters).

From what I read on CT, Tuesdays at this theater (as well as other Clearviews) are hot days, since Cablevision customers who have all three services jam pack the theater and wait in line (in addition to non-Cablevision customers) for the movie to start.

Good news for Mets fans…this theater will show a Mets game next week as part of the Mets at the Movies program, which consists of a live HD feed of the baseball game streaming from a cable box courtesy of Cablevision, baseball-themed food and ushers, and of course, die hard baseball fans yelling at the auditorium as if it were a game. I’d hope they do Yankees but seems that SNY has the advantage over YES since they have a deal with Clearview and Cablevision to show these games to audiences that are smaller than the stadium or who can’t make it to the game due to traffic.

Since I last went to Parsippany, have they put in stadium seating yet? Since Rockaway opened, the only Clearview with stadium seating and DLP I’ve been to that’s good is Mansfield. Pretty soon they’ll upgrade all the digital screens to 4k DLP NEC projectors.

Here’s an interesting story from the Daily Record about a group of Trekkies who will attend the opening of the new ‘Star Trek’ movie this weekend…

During the morning show on DHA, there is a contest in which if a radio caller names the movie from where a quote is aired, they get free movie tickets to any Clearview cinema. For those who have an Optimum Rewards card and have all three services, free movie nights on Tuesdays are also offered.

Later this year, this theater will turn 15. Since then, there have been theater closings, renovations, and openings, the biggest of which is the AMC in Rockaway, the only theater in Morris County to have stadium seating but not true HD projection, which Clearview already has in three of its locations in Morris County plus one in Warren County except Madison and Chester.

On the Clearview website, the company incorrectly says that the cinema is located in Morris Plains, not Parsippany, although the theater is near the border between that borough and the town.

I’m sure Mr John J. Fink that Meredith did indeed have something to do with the projection getting better. After Clearview kicked all the union projectionists to the curb to save money, (i’ll get to that in a moment) they had the popcorn poppers running the booths. No one knew what they were doing. And as far as saving money, they kicked me out of my 10-plex where I was making $17.00 per hour, and hired 2 people, one at $13.00 and the other at $8.00 to run the place. Now math was never my strong point, but even I know that adds up to more than 17. AND they had problems galore, which made me smile from ear to ear. They deserve all they get.

I agree with you John….this theater doesn’t have the soundproofing that Clifton Commons has with their THX theaters, and lacks the stadium seating that Mansfield has. At least this is the only cinema left on the entire Route 46 highway in NJ. I don’t go there that much anymore because of the Rockaway theater, which will soon add digital projection to one of their houses just in time for the flood of 3-D movies that Parsippany has been playing since they got it back in 2007 for Meet the Robinsons.

Interesting that you say that Meredith – Clearview bought out most of the mom and pop operations in Northern NJ (and in some parts of Long Island) I think the only downtown/independents they didn’t consolidate in the area are Hawthorn, Westwood and the Highway in Fair Lawn.

Some they do a great job with like Ridgewood and Great Neck, Long Island. Others suck (Tenifly, the first Clearview had the most uncomfortable seats of any movie theater, including the former folding chairs at Montclair’s long lost Screening Zone). I suppose you may be part of the reason why their projection has improved vastly in the last two years or so (I’d like to think its all the complaining I did on the message boards, in person and to Clearview – at one point this chain was offering such a poor quality experience it was as if they were practically driving people to stay home and rent a film on demand from their parent company Cablevision – luckily in terms of projection, seating comfort and the concession stand they’ve stepped their game up and amazingly are almost on par with National Amusements in terms of quality). Cinema 12 still has its problems including sound bleeding from theater to theater – it sucks when you go see a quiet drama next to a Sci-Fi action flick, especially in the small theaters directly behind the concession stand. Management changing sound levels of each picture still only does so much and can’t make up for Nelson Firman’s shoddy, cheapo construction.

I left Strong a couple months ago. I did explain on the Movie City 8 page. Strong is only doing the digital part with Clearview. Clearview should stick with MSG and RCMH and sell the smaller theaters to Mom and Pop that know how to make a neighborhood theater work the right way.

Sorry, just an opinion…

Meredith, are you now doing all the tech work for clearview? I am wondering if you do the theatre I worked for 10 years, the Middlebrook Galleria in Ocean N.J.? I had that booth looking and running like a hospital ward. Clean and quiet. I’m sorry clearview kicked us all to the curb.

Like screen #4. The showing of Bollywood films is something that the AMC in Rockaway lacks.

John Fink

They are programing Bollywood films, which seem to be quite successful here. The theater itself was successful in part because of its location that they probably didn’t feel it was necessary to play this product (and I think Movie City, which is operated by Phoenix Adlabs Theater Management – itself a joint venture between Phoenix Theaters and Indian mega firm Reliance Media – is renting the theaters as they don’t let you use your credit card, Clearview Advantage card or passes for tickets).

Bollywood product usually will find its way into an over screened area in multiplexes that are underperforming, or are having a slow weekend. For a while it disapeared from North Bergen, and National Amusements dedicated a screen to it at Edgewater during slow periods. I’m sure the disappearance of Cineplaza and the Cineplaza programing at Columbia Park influenced Clearview to show more of it (they often will show the films on the largest screens on late on a Saturday night).

Appears to have some new affiliation with Movie City in Edison:
