This theatre had a Terrazzo Tile floor in front of the front doors which had three curved designs lining up to the front doors.I just remembered this yesterday after seeing a photo of the tile floor on Cinemas Tennessee link. I would link the photo if I knew how.BTW this tile floor is still there also and I remember it was very slick when it was wet.
Thanks for the NASHVILLE update.
Melrose Biloxi Partners LLC is listed at this address now. They must have bought the complex from Scene Three, who had bought it E.B. Raskin Company,Scene Three used to shoot videos in the theatre. I still have not been able to see how much of the theatre is still there, although from the outside everything looks the same.
Great.Look forward to it.Nick said he hopes to have a bunch more of my Theatres on soon.
Thanks Mike,if all goes well I will check out this Theatre complex tomorrow, and check with my friend who still works at the basement Pool Room and see what info he has if any.
I finally spent a few bucks and got on the newspaper archives and for two days just looked at ads from my Augusta Theatres.I wrote down many titles Tisloews that I played and had forgotten I had played an X rated movie at Columbia Sq.Tisloews.it is the best money you will ever spend and you guys. had a lot more theatres.HAD i had a printer I would have RUN out of Ink.Hope you do it one day.
Thanks TheatreOrgan and Mike.
I am starting to think in “those Days'"there wasn’t much difference between the Chains,My city manager showed up about like yours.stayed out our hair and pretty much left Tommy Capers and me alone since were House managers,Still a fancy word for Assistant Manager,The pay wasn’t any better.$2.50 an hour at Columbia Sq.and weekly Salary at GCC.Me and a couple of other Assistants figured out the time we put in on GCC salary was about $1.25 an hour, sad. But we all loved it and when a Theatre Chain has managers like that Hollywood Shines.I don’t give a Damn what anyone says!!!
Thanks TheatreOrgan, thanks for your input also,I always enjoy the stories on C.T. of people who worked or where patrons of the theatres, most people would not care for these stories unless you worked or loved the business.Hope you had a Merry Chrismas.I also like the behind the scenes stories.I drove by this theatre a couple of days ago and from the outside every thing is still standing,I do not know about the inside, thanks for responding to my comment.Hope you have a good new year.
Hey tisloews, thanks for the information you share here and on others theatres. Bits of information of behind the scenes operations of the theatres are always a vital part of the history, so I think the thoughts are welcomed for those of us who consider movie theatres so fascinating and such a part of cinema history.
Merry Christmas to anyone who may read this. I worked quite a few Christmas' and other holidays in the theatre business,as this was a busy time for us back then. The last year I worked for Loews 1981 they did let us close early and not show the last show on Christmas Eve that year, only time that ever happened. We never closed for anything.Funny you mention being off on Mondays Mike as that was my day off too for years, only after I made Manager of this theatre my day off was on Wednesday I believe and on Friday I would go the the bank and do the weekly reports and checks but someone else would open and manage the theatre that night so I had Friday night off. Managers always had to work Saturday Night.Even when I was the Asst. Manager at the downtown Loews Crescent our city Manager would come back before the last showing till we closed and just hang out.He would also go to the suburb houses at night after opening the Crescent several times a week.I guess that was part of his job, he would also have to come when the District Manager from Dallas would pop in about every 3 months. Sorry for my rambling but no one seems to post on this page anymore. At least Chuck does not post on this page and can complain about turning this into a personal BLOG what ever that is?
Have a great CHRISTMAS along with all the other THEATRE guys I chat with.
I happen to be off on Monday,Tisloews.just my day off.I heard on Monday night Football. I thought we should at least book a couple of BEATLES movies on Late Shows,But no my City Manager a Big ELVIS fan nixed that.I think he said they were out of release, but i said “To hell with it” no one really cared anymore. Most of Theatre Buddies had moved which i would doing soon.In fact it pissed me so much that might have been one of the reason’s Mr.Tinney fired me.Along with missing an Employees meeting!Same one I had heard since 1974.Imperial showed very few DISNEY movies once NATIONAL HILLS and DANIEL VILLAGE opened.
BALCONY OPEN:During my days a doorman/usher I remember the balcony being open for the Disney movie “Son of Flubber” a reissue in black and white and we sold out the house that night.I got to work the balcony and remember the cheers and laughter of the crowd that night,it was quite an experence for a 15 year old kid, those were the days,we always did quite well with the Disney product, new and old,the Loews Madison ran day and date with us but the Melrose always had higher boxoffice numbers for some reason.
30 years ago tonight after working my shift as manager of this theatre while driving home I heard the the news of John Lennons death over the radio in my my car,it was a Monday night I will never forget it,I do not not remember what movie we were showing.I do remember that a friend of mine also now deceased,we went to a local bar and gave our respects.
Hopefully it will keep standing.Wouldn’t you like to win a hundred million dollars and re-open it,AND PLAY WHAT YOU WANT!!!!!
Drove by yesterday and the signboards have been removed from the marques’s and replaced by plywood and painted to match the building. At least the keep the complex looking good.
O.K. Mike I will.
this shouldn’t be off topic since it is about a Loew’s Theatre, but check out what I put on for Atlanta’s Lowe’s Grand. You should like it. Wish i had a dang printer.
The architects of this theatre also designed the Bellemeade, the sister theatre of the Melrose, they also designed these other Nashville theatres,Belmont,Tennessee,Woodland, and the Capir in Shelbyville,Tennessee which is still in operation.
yes, if you guys were running First Run you would think Loews would want decent seats,One thing about the Imperial, the seats were in good condition. We were lucky to have a Projectionist in Augusta who serviced all the Union Theatres fixing odds and ends for extra money,I bet a lot of cities had the same thing.
This theatre is listed with 1000 seats which was correct when it was new, 200 in the balcony and 800 on the main floor, although in my days there were about 15 to 20 seats that had been removed I guess because there where broke an could not be repaired. I always wondered why they did not take some seats out of the balcony and put them on the main floor as the balcony was only open during peak business. The landlord or Loews did not want to spend the money to do this.I wonder if any seats are still in the building I have been by there several times to ask what the condition of the inside is like now but the place is always locked up tight. The outside still looks the same except they have repainted it several times.
Yeah you know who he is.So I ramble.Like you bring up the pinball machines I had forgot all about that.
Only one C.T. member? Ramblin’s O.K.
We had a blasted pinball machine at Plitt. It too made noise, but I think we muted the sound.GCC had two video games by concesssion, but really did not have much room at REGENCY I,II and III.National Hills was robbed by a “bottle bandit” it made the AP.It is on NATIONALHILLS THEATRE Somewhere in all my ramblin’s, as i have been told by one CT member!
