I saw many movies at the Cinemart when I was a kid. The above article makes it seem like it was a porn theater after ‘77 but it was actually still quite popular – mostly because it didn’t suffer the multiplex syndrome of the late '70’s like most theaters in north Wilmington (Branmar and Concord Mall went twin, Tr-State went Quad – thereby creating much smaller boxlike view experiences). Cinemart was big, wide and comfortable. I remember seeing “The Fog” there in 1980 when I was 14 and the theater was PACKED. Cinemart was actually the first to close before the rest of Merchandise Mart. Strawbridge & Clothier dept. store was torn down a few years ago and I was afraid Cinemart would soon follow. But it still remains. Now I commute by train everyday from Wilmington to New York and pass it’s big wide backside and think of all those great movie experiences i had there …and hope one day someone will remember how great it was and open it back up. Thanks for the great photos.
hey, jwheckert? It would be cool if we got a hold of some other ads from 1980 to see what other movies played at the cinemart in its last months… specially summer of 1980.. Love your ads you got already. cool rare stuff. http://www.flickr.com/photos/57086731@N05/sets/72157626704767935/with/5768073477/
its funny how gory and violent movies started to become by 1980…Alot of these movies that were sown in 1980 could never be shown these day’s… specially “The Exterminator”
The way these pics of the cinemart were taken reminded me of like blair witch project or something. very eerie and neat..
wow, thanks… hey, jweckert, the toilet paper thats shown in the cinemart photos you took, do you think thats the same paper from 1980???
Ronnie, Cinema center 3 is in the Newark Shopping center. It’s still in operation. was a former budco twin. The second house was split 60/40 resulting in a very narrow 3rd theater much like the AMC Concord Mall II.
no info on cinema center 3. claims it was in Delaware shopping center??
Also, looks like over the years people smashed up the place. Wonder if that couch was there since 1980?
wow, cool, iam so interested in this theater. Hey, couple questions, was the bathrooms upstairs or downstairs.. and i noticed that in the men’s bathroom toilet, there is still hanging toilet paper , is that paper from 1980??? cause it looks really newer? Also, graffiti is on the side wall now is gone, and the box office glass was there in 06 is now boarded up. Wish they would have left the Exterminator poster in the frame. ha ha.. Do you know of any other movies that were showing there in 1980??? Exterminator was released around sept 19th 1980, so this is when the theater was closed. Can’t believe its still standing after all these years..
I took them in May of ‘06. I first started paying attention to the theater in 2000. I’d been driving past it for my whole life on the way to Baker Jeep just down the road. In April of 06 the front door was wide open and I just walked In, It was dark and so I came back with a flash light. My old boss said he’d snuck in too sometime back in '88 at that time the seats were still there. As you can see not much left of this 1,000 seat 70mm show palace. One of the fire exits in the auditorium should still be accessible as I believe it is part of the fire code the rest are barred off.
what year where these photos taken?????
Photos from inside the cinemart from a few years back.

Hey jordan, cool you saw apocalypse in 1979.. Was it a nice theater inside???
Saw several movies at the CineMart when I was living in Wilmington as a kid. The only one I can recall off-hand is Apocalypse Now, playing some time after it had opened exclusively in New York & LA. Coppola’s film had played the Zeigfeld in New York. This print had no titles or credits at beginning or end. A printed program was handed out to patrons detailing all credits. The print I saw at CineMart had added end credits. No program was given to patrons. Hard to believe that as of June 2011 the theater (what’s left of it) still stands.

I would like to find old newspaper articles from delaware circa, 1980, and see the listings for movies being shown at the cinemart that year. Any ,librarys in del might have them??
So, the last poster in that frame was THE EXTERMINATOR. wow… so long ago…
Quess i was lucky just taking pictures..
when I explore old theatres usually an exit door can be found that will open.
Maybe the person knows the property owner.
It is a risky spot to go trespassing in with a police station right across the road.
I wonder how this dude got inside.? I would love to see if they’re any seats left. you can see the screen dangling. thats cool.. when i went, i couldn’t find a way in. Quess if you got caught you could get arrested for breaking and entering on private property ..
Its been closed since sept of 1980..

Last I saw the old theater and sign on the front still remain.
they are doing stuff to the shopping center across the street. first they tore down the old Strawbridges building, and since then it looks like they’ve been doing more. I used to go to Tuesday Morning until they left the shopping center.
I always wonder what it’s like inside, after sitting empty for all those years.
Also, looks like they might finally by tearing this place down .. looks like theres a lot of work going on there.. we’ll see.
Hey took a bunch of pictures today go here to view them.
