These theatre names were on a Canton website. Loew’s, Valentine, Dueber, Ohio, Alhambra and Strand. Could someone help confirm these theatres. I could add them if I knew there address.
Lost Memory: I’ve been to see this special atmospheric theatre last summer. I met the manager and his lovely wife. We watched a movie that night and enjoyed the atmospheric atmosphere as the clouds moved overhead and a slight breeze was felt like a natural breeze would feel when sitting outside in a courtyard setting as is depicted in most atmospheric theatres! I highly recommend this theatre if you are ever in Canton Ohio. BTW, great photo of this theatre and there is a Hollywood style walk of fame by the front doors. Also recommend a great restaurant nearby with many famous celebrity photos on the walls!
Just down the street from the Palace is a great little Italian restaurant called Little Chicago. They have several b/w celebrity photos along the walls i.e. Rat Pack, etc. Even the menus have different b/w celebrity photos on each one. The atmosphere is cozy and the entrees delicious. If you find yourself in Canton, check it out and be sure to check out the enlarged James Dean speeding ticket that is framed in the back of the restaurant. It is entitled Last Autograph as Mr. Dean’s signature is at the bottom of the speeding ticket which he rec’d on the day he died 2 hours later on a CA highway. Across the ticket someone has written….VOID DECEASED!
Thanks again to Patsy!!!I enjoyed meeting with you your husband. Any one who loves Movie Palaces as much as the two of you are always welcome and deserving of the full tour. Any one who will be in the area and wants a tour, please drop me a line….

GWaterman: I have been with the Palace since 1989 and do not know of Mr. Kirk.

All Palace Fans:

CharlesVanBibber: Thanks…I overlooked it…sorry. Hope you are doing fine on the ground and in the air!
Can anyone post a summer theatre schedule for the Palace so when I arrive in Canton I will be able to see inside this theatre and enjoy a production or musical program?
Thanks, CantonPalaceTech for your answer about Mr. Kirk. Is he involved in the theatre currently?
Found it listed under Akron Civic Theatre and had forgotten that I had listed this one among my favorites so will check it out when I visit Akron and Canton Ohio on my summer theatre tour.
I can’t find anything listed for the Civic under the State of Ohio.
CantonPalaceTech: Thanks for your reply to my Soul Blazers posted on Feb. 26th. They are an awesome sounding group!
Patsy. We do in fact have Jimmy & the Soul Blazers here often. As for the Palace in Akron, try looking up the Civic. It also is an Eberson Atmospheric.
GWaterman. I spoke with the prior TD who had worked here since the late 70’s.. All though I’m sure Mr. Kirk was involved, I don’t believe he was TD.
Does anyone in Canton know or remember W. Alan Kirk, who was probably the Technical Director for the 1980 renovation? He was a theatre professor at Ohio State, and I recall he left the university and moved to Canton to do this work. I was a student of his and he gave me and a friend a tour of the Palace at the time. It was very beautiful, and made quite an impact on me.
Does anyone have information about the Palace in Akron. Recently I was told about this theatre. BTW, anyone in the Canton area would know about a band called Jimmy and the Soulblazers who have performed at the Palace/Akron with Gladys Knight and the Pips!
Mike Smith: Now after seeing the color interior atmospheric Palace photos a screening will be a must-see this summer! The name Eberson and atmospheric are 2 of the reasons why! And it’s icing on the cake to read…“The theater is now listed on the National Register for Historic Places.” Congratulations! See you at the Palace!
I had hoped to see the other Palace that WAS in Youngstown, but that won’t be the case now!
Mike Smith: What an absolute joy to read your personal Palace comments especially about the Kilgen organ that was restored! I’ll be in the Canton area this summer so will most definitely check the Palace out!
Though I had this one on my Add to Favorites list I hadn’t really studied it until I was looking through my copy of Cinema Treasures. Since it is an Eberson-atmospheric theatre it will be on my must-see list this summer! My 2 favorite theatre words are ‘Eberson’ and ‘atmospheric’ and my least favorite theatre word is ‘demolished’!
I appreciate the fact that it would “make a lovely concert hall” however, being that opera is not widely accessible to the general populace any more, it is more lucrative for the theatre to be a cinema for the main part of the time. Personally, I would miss it if it were nothing more than a concert hall. Further, they do have the ballet and the orchestra for those who enjoy a “higher culture” production.
This priceless treasure is my hometown theatre…born and raised in Canton, I have been privileged to see this beautiful movie house “age” and then renovated to its original magnificence.
In addition to the Moorish “outdoor” feel of the auditorium, the ceiling has the “cloud projections” and animated birds in full operation. The original “Kilgen” pipe organ has been fully restored and used during performances prior to a “roadshow” motion picture and special film presentations including “organ interlude” intermissions. The organ pipe chambers were designed to truly give you a “stereophonic” surround sound even in the early days of the cinema. Technically the theatre has state-of-the-art projection equipment capable of running nearly all formats and aspect rations. The Canton Palace is probably the most outstanding operating motion picture theatre in northeastern Ohio. When in Canton a screening is a must at the “Palace.”
