CORRECTION: The photos mentioned above are of the Cineworld Fulham, not the Hammersmith or the Apollo. My apologies for the mishap. I am new to the old world and am just getting my stride here.
Here are a few photos of the Apollo Theater from July 2006. Although all of the trappings of the original auditorium have been scrapped, you can still some of the balcony molding in cinemas four and five. Cinema six is built on what I believe was the former backstage area. Both the theatre exterior and lobby are beautiful and the staff is very courteous.
Who needs another crap Tesco Supermarket when there is already one 5 minutes walk away from this site. What Hammersmith needs is a High Street with some character. Some reason to go downtown in an evening, not an area where everything closes at 7pm, a run down cinema, decrepit live theatre and restaurants run by low-rent chains. No wonder everyone goes elsewhere. We need a decent cinema here, we already have two concert venues of major size that are open occasionally!
I used to manage this cinema from 1999 to 2000, behind the screens all the dressing rooms and the original stage is still intact. During the conversion workmen built a suspended walkway behind the screens and unfortunatly smashed a hole in the left hand side of the stages frame, but the galleons are still there. The original toilets including fittings are also still inplace, when exiting screen 3 through the rear exit a door on the left takes you down to them.
From the staff room on the second floor you can gain access to the old projection suite, lounge and toilets (all with orginal features!).
The site has gotten worse and worse over the years with little or no money being spent on it, i believe Tesco Property have purchased the site and it is due to close Oct ‘05.
