Ken… I can only wonder when this incredible stream of images from your trip here in May and June will finally run its full course. Every time I think it’s completely dried up, you find a few more photos to splash onto the site! Wonderful work. Thanks again for sharing.

In December of 1980, the Beverly Twin was showing straight first run films such as “Private Benjamin” and “The Idolmaker”:

I see no listings for the Beverly in the March ‘82 newspapers I have (neither the Movie Clock or in individual film ads). Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the theater was closed.

Listed in Film Daily Yearbook;1926 and 1927 editions with a seating capacity of 1,600. The 1930 edition of F.D.Y. gives a seating capacity of 1,310. In 1941 and 1943 editions it has a seating capacity given as 1,394, which by 1957 had reduced to 1,359.

After closing, the auditorium was converted into a school, but some time later, there was a collapse of part of the building. The auditorium section was then demolished and a new building erected on the land (now used as a Public School). The frontage and foyer area were retained and are in retail use, with a few traces of decoration remaining within this section.

Here are a couple of photographs of the facade I took in June 2006:

In ‘67 or '68 I took my 2 kid sisters, ages 10 and 12, to see “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, complete with intermission music & exit music ! At a neighborhood theater ! Going to the movies was a family event in those days ! frankie from Brooklyn

Late 70’s, the protest in the community about the triple x features was immense at the time.

I’m confused. It was a dollar theater before it was twinned?

This was the theater my father took my brother and me to see the summer Disney festival in the early 70s. I don’t know what the price for tickets was back then (I was a little girl!) but I don’t think it was a dollar.

Also, when was it twinned? I’m pretty sure I remember seeing it twinned by the time I was a teenager (early 80s) and a 99 cent store by around 1984 or 1985.

IIRC, the auditorium was demolished and replaced by a technical school (typing? stenography? computers?), not a yeshiva, before it became a public school annex.

People who knew the original owner/manager told me he took a great deal of pride and care in the Beverly… I remember the theatre was remodeled when I saw “The Sound Of Music.”

It seems that the auditorium of this theater is now the auditorium of the Public School which was built behind it a few years back.

The lobby of the former Beverly theatre is currently a 99 cent store.
