A big thanks Ms.Gontz.
FriendsoftheRialto the first job is simply to preserve it! I was inside a couple years back for a party. The plasters crumbling, the seats are sagging. It needs fixing up and preserving before it can serve any purpose.
Congrats on the great haul provcolimb! Hope you have a fun NOTLD showing. Can you re post the links? Your last post has a a whole left column missing.
A 16mm and 8 mm enthusiast friend just had a party showing some shorts and Forbidden Planet. FP had turned red and the sound wasnt ideal but the atmosphere was definitely more fun with the sound of the projector and the whirr of teh reels. And the “at home” versions of The Mummy and that monster movie bout the giant tarantula terrorizing new mexico were deifinitely “better” in 10 minute formats.
Viva La Celluloid!!
I know a lot of you dislike seeing a new movie in a theater (rude audience, price, quality of modern films, cost of gas etc) But hopefully those of you nearby will support the owner who wiped out his life savings to stay a first run house by patronising the Ganado when you can.
I clicked on the photo and was suprised at how Atomic Age the place looked; any photos from earlier in its history? Is there some plaster roccoco (sp?) masterpiece hiding behind the shiny chrome?
Hopefully AMC wont sit on the place to long and a theater friendly buyer will emerge.
This mid sized single screen theater is in a midsized town and available for lease. It has 2 floors of offices/apartments above it, Ive no idea if there occupied or not. It seems in need of cosmetic restoration. Google street view oughta give you a better view of what is still called “the Regency” by the locals. It is the sister theater (by way of ownership) to teh Golden State Theater. There is a multiplex indy house (the Osio) a couple blocks down, but I think Monterey could support a single screen venue.
Oaklands a couple hours away so I can’t support the Grand Lake regularly, but for a chance to enjoy such a CinemaTreasure Ive seen more then one first run movie a second time when I was in town.
Wow JDC, I knew about the multiple showing clause for first run cinemas, but didnt know about the 7 day a week rule. Youd think the studios would relent on Mondays. As many times as I have enjoyed going to teh movies on Mondays (I work in theater so often Monday is my Friday) I feel bad for the added expense/effort of owners and weary managers to open a near empty house.
Newer interior/exterior shots on the sales notice for the El Rey might be helpful. I hope its still looks that pristine on the inside as the outside is looking a little rundown.
From the RetroDome newsletter: news for the projection buffs.
You Won’t Believe Your Eyes and Ears!
Thanks to the extremely generous offer of Brian Bakhshandeh (a fan of The Retro Dome and an uber-knowledgeable projection and sound designer) we recently upgraded our projection and sound system from HD DVD and the sound design originally created for the theatre. As of May 2010, we have installed a state of the art Blu-Ray player that is equipped with Anchor Bay VRS Video Processor and the ability to playback Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. This is one of the most advanced processors in the market today.
All movies are now shown in 720P DLP Digital Format. If the movie is presented in DVD, you will experience Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1, whereas before, this was not offered and the presentation was not even in Stereo Sound, making it a huge improvement. Also, the picture is much improved thanks to the Anchor Bay Video Processor and Digital DLP.
If the movie is presented in Blu Ray, you are in for a real treat. You can now experience Dolby True HD or DTS-HD Master Audio. These are Uncompressed Raw Studio Quality Sound formats! No theater is currently offering this, as this sound quality can NOT be offered with 35 or 70mm film.
Since most movies that are shown are older, they really benefit from Blu Ray as the picture and sound is light years ahead of 35mm presentation. Unlike film, there are no pops, buzzing, film reel artifacts or sound issues. Even Mr. Lucas and Mr. Spielberg agree that Digital is far superior to film and these guys ARE purists! When you see a film, you want to see and hear what the director intended. The Retro Dome now let’s you do that.
Ssteve I hope the town comes out to support teh venue while you find a new owner. In the meantime, the website listed is not opening. I assume your adding information for potential buyers (and us movie theater lookie loos)
Just a Quick and Dirty List of last years trip to LA, done on the fly and with no money!
The Cinerama
(all on the same street)El Capitan and Graumans Chinese and the Roosevelt Hotel (at Graumans and El Capitan its $12 to see a movie so the bf and I just took pictures of the footprints and neon signs)
Hollywood Forever Cemetary
Driving along Sunset to get somewhere we spotted the Directors Guild Building, Hollywood High (where Rudolph Valentinos Sheik is still the school mascot) the Roxy Niteclub, and with the traffic so bad and most places not accessible to us we had fun taking pics from teh car like we were on a cheesy bus tour.
Mels Drive In Diner is right next to this great art deco building where Max Factor first started mixing makeup for movies (awesome alliteration ah?) which is now a film museum (it was evening by the time we got to Mels so we couldnt go in)
We didnt go but next time were down wed like to see the Griffith Observatory, beautifully renovated in the last 2 years and a James Dean filming locale to boot!
The man deserves a medal! His house should be preserved for future generations once he no longer wants to live in it! Lets get the National Registry paperwork started!
Butternut73 Ive been looking all over CT but still cant find a name and locale for you theater. Hows it going whats happening wheres the website? I like supporting indy houses that’re too far away from me by buying swag so if youve gotta zazzle or cafepress post a link!
This is a fascinating discussion. Any locals in Northern California that one can apprentice for? In California what City department gave the tests?
And I gotta say I was at my local indie 6 plex last nite to see
The Red Baron and the poorly written badly edited movie was made wors by weirdness with the (I presume) digital projection. Pixelation, weird sound levels. Nitrate, mylar or sattelite signals the people in the booth need training and a regard for the quality of the show.
I wish Maya had been able to come thru on this. I like the theater they built near me, tho they seem to be having trouble with front signage (digital marquee has died and teh poster case lights dont seem to all be working properly for teh last several months).
I have mixed feelings about a City completely funding a venture like this(a 20 plex? Even 10 years ago that would seem excessive and risky to me) but hopefully the project will bounce back.
Thanks for the pics. The staircase and teh ceiling look like two different eras. The ceiling reminds of Civil War era American theaters rather than a picture palace.
Plusthe years of (apparently) painting over the dings gouges and nicks in the staircase.
Hmmm, the signage reminds me. Ive been meaning to rent

Wow only took the SBC 4 years to find a consultant that told them what they wanted to hear.
“And what’s the deal with the cowboy?”
Thats just how they roll in Capistrano.
Its a great lookings pace and hopefully the town will be able to support it.
Though I cannot attend thanks for alerting me to this great event and your organization. Do you preserve your lecture events for posterity?

Sorry you had to give up the Gentry and hope you find the right kind of new owner. All the best to you and your family.

The Google map (both the CT link and Tinseltoes) links wind up on Cypress Ave. Is there a way to fix that?
The link seems to be dead and no new one is established. Google search of the Museum name yields several good articles but no home site.
This link comes up first but Im not sure if its officially tied to the museum.
