Architect Sjoerd Soeters designed five buidings where amongst is a policestation and a megastore. The one in the middle is the cinema. With 2746 seats and 14 rooms (5 large and 9 smaller) it is Rotterdam’s largest cinema.
The central hall has skewed connection bridges to separate large visitors crowds. In the center ther’s a large selfservice candyshop. Outside on the right side of the building six curved metal screens suggest the sails of a boat.
The architect is Koen van Velsen. The building has a light construction because is was build on top of an already existing parking garage. It was meant as a replacement of the obsolete cinema’s Lumière, Thalia and Corso.
Three weeks ago, on december 7 the eight month during renovation was finished. On this sunday morning people were invited and in the opportunity to shoot pictures everywhere in the theater. The room and the stage remained the same, everything else has changed.
The Thalia cinema closed in 1997 after Pathé Cinema started a succesful seven room department on the Schouwburgplein nearby. After that Thalia was only used for some editions of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It was closed for the rest of the year. Then the Beurs Cafe took in. They went broke and the doors were closed for a long time again. The same cafe made a fresh new start in 2011.
This week a large renovation had been started. This will go on until 2015. The theater will never be the same again. Last April the 18th the theater organized a photoshoot for interested ones. The results can be viewed here.
