Hogwash…you believe everything you hear on cable news? How about dirty arm rests, door handles into the theater, handling money at the ticket counter and concession stand, people coughing and sneezing, etc. Why not just live in a plastic bubble and practice “safe life”?
I thoroughly enjoyed it! And I’m not a big fan of today’s music or dancing. It was totally entertaining and the 3D was excellent…a lot of out-of-screen effects during the dance scenes as well as being “immersive”. You felt like you were on the dance floor the whole time. Of the three in this franchise, this was the best!
Justin, I’m not ready to try “Cats & Dogs” again just yet but when I am I will call ahead. I’m on Movietickets.com all the time but never thought that a greyed out showtime could mean trouble. Thanks for the tip. Got plans for “Step Up 3D” tomorrow and hope there isn’t a problem with that.
I heard that…Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner. I’m anxious to see that. I grew up at time when it was standard procedure to show a Warner Bros. “Looney Toons” or “Merrie Melodies” cartoon or two before the movie. As a kid, that made us “light up”. Now, as a grown kid, I could light up all over again as I suspect we’ll see more of that…no doubt this time in 3D to go with the all-3D animated movies coming out.
Technically, “G-Force” was the first 3D to show at Rockaway…three days only (8/18, 8/19, 8/20)…then “X-Games 3D” took over the screen on the 21st, bumping “G-Force” to a 2D screen.
I wonder if the remaining digital projectors will be 3D-capable. How much more is the “add-on”? Or will some 3D movies still have to play in 2D digital? In any case, what great progress in just one year’s time.
I tried (again) to see “Cats & Dogs” today at 12:55pm and (you guessed it) it was cancelled due to technical problems…was told this at the counter so no refund/readmit pass involved. This is the third time…next time I’ll phone ahead.
So far, “Cats and Dogs” has been a real moneymaker…for me! I tried to see it twice (Friday 10:35am and today 10:35am). Both times they had to cancel the performance due to technical problems. So they refunded our money AND gave us re-admittance passes. I now have two. I assume they’re good for ANY performance regardless of time-of-day. We’ll see. There were only a handful of people in the audience both times (I was the oldest “kid” since 3D owns me) so it wasn’t a financial disaster for the theater.
Glad you enjoyed it Justin. A friend of mine who had NO interest in animated movies or 3D (didn’t even want to see Avatar) saw DM and thoroughly enjoyed it (a convert?).

My post from March 21, 2010:
Was curious as to who contributed the most to this site.
No. 5 – John J. Fink (9 posts)
No. 4 – movie534 (20)
No. 3 – SlimShady (41)
No. 2 – JJD (87)
No. 1 – guess who! (over 500)
Don’t think I need to update it. We’re eating his dust!
That’s funny, Peter. At 65, I am leaving brain cells all over Morris County. Maybe that’s why I had trouble with it. I also found the non-stop soundtrack rather annoying. Oh well, to each his own. Glad you guys liked it.
“Despicable Me” was a 10 out of 10…offbeat, funny, sentimental, and excellent use of 3D…right up there with “Dragon” and “Toy Story 3”. It looked great on the RealD screen. I didn’t notice any imperfections. There will be sequels.
I saw Inception too (on IMAX). I went with two friends and NONE of us have any idea what we saw. There was dead silence in the theater during and after the movie. I wonder how many people have any idea what they saw. That’s 2&½ hours of my life I’ll never get back. I’ll stick to stuff like “Dragon” and “Despicable Me”.
Thanks Justin. That’s what I thought. So even if we wind up in a smaller capacity theater, we still get the same large screen as the larger capacity theaters. One drawback…people who prefer the back rows would probably feel more comfortable in the larger theaters.
Should have asked this a long time ago…are the screens the same size in each of the 15 theaters (IMAX excluded, of course). It seems they are. It seems the widths of the theaters are the same too and that capacity is determined only by number of rows (seats).
Mike, I’d go after them and get that money they owe you (with interest)(ha). I saw every one of those Sensurround movies you mentioned. It was “fun” but experiencing it once or twice was enough. That technology is good for theme parks as part of their “4D” effects (vibrating seats, spraying water or air in your face, etc.) but could you imagine having to listen to those speakers from the adjacent auditoriums in today’s multiplexes? Today’s speakers are quite effective themselves when cranked up.
Good news! You DON’T have to sit through a two-hour movie wearing glasses. I assume you don’t wear prescription glasses. Otherwise, you ARE sitting through a two-hour movie wearing glasses. The point I’m trying to make is that people will wear prescription glasses, sun glasses, goggles on the job, goggles while skiing, swimming, etc. and not complain. Yet, when it comes to a 3D movie, suddenly the glasses become a big problem. So, don’t go to a 3D movie! No one’s forcing you to. See the 2D version.
3D is no more glitter than sound or color were in their day. It’s just another technological enhancement. It was never meant to improve the story, only to bring us closer to the realism of everyday life. Assuming no disabilities, we don’t go through life reading subtitles…we hear stuff. We also see in color and what we see has depth. See my point?
Unfortunately, studios will exploit 3D’s success by adding it simply to make an extra buck. Not all movies need 3D; not all movies needed color. Black and white has been very effective for certain genres of film. Sound is a different story. Unless we want to go back to live organ music, it’s nice to hear the actor’s words and the music soundtrack.
Thanks for the opportunity to, once again, defend 3D.
You guys are funny. Tell me, what the heck are we supposed to discuss on this site? I thought it was all about what’s playing, theater upgrades, new technology, ticket prices, concession stand food (just kidding). Let’s face it, 3D is currently hot and getting hotter (3DTV). Admittedly, some of the posts regarding what’s on each screen can be found elsewhere but, again, what else is there to talk about? I think once Rockaway goes all digital and 3D becomes even more commonplace, things will calm down. In the meantime, stay tuned to the “Further Adventures at AMC”. It beats anything on TV these days.
larry2, welcome back but it sounds like sour grapes over 3D’s success. Did you ever get to see Avatar? If so, what did you think?
And, Mike, I don’t and never have worked for AMC. I’m just your average “no lifer”.
Good question. He seems to be the only one with the inside track. I thought in his last post (April 5, 2010) he said “not before May..but yes before September” regarding remaining 4K.
lol, Mike, not really. My main interest in this site was to check on the progress of Rockaway getting digital 3D. Now that it’s a reality, I just do it for fun. I’m retired and have a lot of time on my hands. I’ll let others speak for themselves.
Don’t know much about the dining stuff, Justin. I never visit the concession stand when I go. I go to morning shows followed by lunch at the mall. What time of day do you plan on seeing Toy Story 3? Might be fun to finally put a face on the famous Justin Fencsak.
Hey Justin, when would you being seeing “Step Up 3D”? I could actually see this one again and have yet to meet the “King”?
Hogwash…you believe everything you hear on cable news? How about dirty arm rests, door handles into the theater, handling money at the ticket counter and concession stand, people coughing and sneezing, etc. Why not just live in a plastic bubble and practice “safe life”?

(Peter’s got a long way to go!)
BTW, the two friends who went with me were ages 26 and 46 and they agreed with me. Maybe, it’s not my age afterall.

That’s my cue, Mike, so here I go…

I didn’t. I worked for AT&T. Mike assumed I worked for AMC.
I retired in ‘98. I turned 65 in January.
I like that idea!

BTW, do my eyes deceive me or are the pre-Noon 3D prices back to $9 for RealD (vs. $10) and %10 for lieMAX (vs. $12)? Mistake? or price adjustment?
