As to pstapel’s post, here are some links to information about the Art Mission Theater that was established to fill the independent theater void in Binghamton, after the original Art Theater burned down. It finally found a home on Prospect Street, across the street from the Little Venice restaurant parking lot.

My college apartment housemate worked at the concession/ticket counter when it was an X-rated adult film house. The projection booth was on a second floor level and was accessed by a stairway conected to an open catwalk that was attached to the front of the booth. On Thursday nights my housemate didn’t want to miss Mork and Mindy, so I would get on the bus with our portable tv, and go to the theater, so we could watch it together behind the candy counter. The refrigerator where employees kept their food was upstairs in the projection booth. When you walked across the catwalk you had to bend down and crouch-walk underneath the projection beam. We could always tell if we hadn’t stooped low enough because a collective groan would emminate from the house. Also, the clientele wasn’t what most people thought; they were mostly university students and traveling business men.

There was also something special about the projection equipment. I can’t remember specifically, but I think it was the oldest equipment still in operation in the US. A special repairman had to come down from Syracuse every time the projector broke down.

The high school theater recently underwent major renovations again in ‘09/'10.

I know the person who is the manager of the theater in the Binghamton High School building. I will ask about the Serling name carving. The theater in the HS building was named the Helen Foley Theater after Rod’s high school drama teacher. The school also has a Rod Serling School of Fine Arts, which my son is a graduate of. There is a bkack and white portrait of Rod on his diploma.

I was probably past the age when you could get anything for free, but I remember the vending machines in the hallway where you could get soda when the concession stand was closed. The little paper cup would come down, get filled with the clear carbonated liquid, and then the flavored syrup would come down. My favorite was the cherry flavor. I saw many movies at this theater, but my most vivid memory was seeing Bambi. Anyone who has seen Bambi should know why.

I also could have sworn this drive-in was already closed before the the mall construction started. A big problem with the two local drive-ins, toward the end, was rowdyism and crime. Infact, I remember a local newspaper article citing this as a major problem at both theaters, and a top reason for the other local drive-in’s, The Airport Drive-in, closing.

If this is the correct address I am really confused because the original V-shaped entry/ticket booth was made into a car dealership office that is still on the Parkway, today. Was the structure moved, or is the above location incorrect? The last movie I remember seeing there was one of the Star Wars. I have no idea which one, but it was more than likely the last of the first trilogy.

For some reason I remember seeing films in every theater in the area, that were open during my lifetime, except this one. I recall the name and location, and the first band I worked for played in bars on Clinton street a lot, but I don’t recall it even registering that there was a theater on this street. Strange.

@steve_verno: Where was the Sun theater?

I saw a Planet of the Apes series “Dusk ‘til Dawn” marathon here with my first serious boyfriend. I think it was probably the first ever drive-in I went to with my parents (there was also a drive-in in nearby Vestal). I remember seeing the MGM lion roaring and then nothing else because I fell asleep. It was my son’s first and last drive-in experience. He was a baby, so he fell asleep also! The drive-in closed soon after that.

A friend of mine lives near Nashville, Tenn., and in Murffesboro they are building a new drive-in theater, slated to open in August of this year.

It was open into the ‘70’s. There have been alot of articles about the renovations lately, as the asbestos abatement in the main theater has been completed, and volunteers will now be able to start restoration projects. I will be volunteering at some point in the coming year. They have an active Facebook page. I will bring the link.

Classmates of mine remember going there as children, so it would have to have been open atleast until 1960. One of my friends remembers seeing Toby Tyler there and it was released in 1960.

That should read municipal building.

Someone posted a photo to the Whitney Point history group I created on Facebook, so now we have a photo of the last incarnation of the Point theater. This photo also clears up the confusion of whether it was above the firestation, or on the second floor of the town hall. The building was inclusively called the municipsl building. The fire station was on the right, and the town hall was on the left side of the first floor. The Point theater was housed on the entire second floor. I am still trying to pin point the street number and if this was the building that burned down in 1967.

I started a Whitney Point memories group on Facebook and most of them are saying the Point Theater was next to the hardware store and burned down in 1967.

Someone also suggested there is an extensive newspaper clippings archive at the Mary Wilcox Library that may be helpful.
