This it one of tghe five panels at RMCH that make up Louis Bouch’s THE PANTASMAORGIA OF THE THEATRE". The panel shown in the picture in based on the vaudeville comedy team of Weber and Fields
I think the lighting is reflecting off the black paint – the carpet looks light, it is deep blue. The light is also reflecting off the the deco fire hose grate to the far right in the picture – you can see the the “F” in fire reflecting above the “H” in hose.
In Christine Roussel’s book (she was the archivist for Rock center archives) “The Art of Rockefeller Center, on page 32 of the grand loungs from 1932 that shows it is not rosewood. Donald Deskey incorproated industial products in his art deco design. on page 63 Roussell’s book she states the wall’s of the grand Lounge were ” Specially prepared pyroxylin coated black walls"
They do not remove seat for the NFL Draft – they build platforms above seats in in the orchestra. The 3 mezzanines are available for seating. This was the third year the NFL Draft was held at RCMH, previously it held at the Theatre at Madision Square Garden. There has not been an Easter Show at RCMH in over 10 years
i turned off the TV half way through the show – i was looking for more detail on the forenics and research of the restoration. I always loved the accoustics at the beacon …to each their own.
i saw a movie in the dead of winter here 25 plus years ago on the way home from a pocono ski weekend We were enticed by the the sign “come on in – we have heat!”. Tiny lobby was warm and cozy …the theatre you could hang meat in. We laughed and shivered all the way thru the movie that we taken by the sign.
i thought you meant the background of remnant was brown (or rust), making the carpet newer , since the carpet has been replaced a couple times since 1999. What are the three colors on the piece of carpet you have ?
Deskey designed and titled “ the singing women ” carpet – it was part of his entry for for the competion to desgin RCMH. While the carpet looked blue -green from being soiled and darkened with age, it was replaced before the 1999 restoration while a color match of blue – green tones. The 1999 restoration research of the rockefeller center archives found the true colors to be a backround of rust , with the stylized singing women in tan and purple.
The waves symbolize singing as well the womens hair. I like the fish story though. If the carpet is brown, I would assume it to be newer carpet that is now replaced with greater frequency.

no info of the style book
But as far a Radio City Music hall being maintained. The carpets are regularly steam cleaned, floors polished, seats cleaned and gum removed. Before each cmas season, all metal surfaces are polished, the gold leaf is repaired, outside marquees and blades is polished, all back stage areas are repainted.
the organ is not in great disrepair, i’ve heard about a couple of keys….not hundreds an budget is not an issue and seen with the 70 million dollar renovation or all the maintence since the reno , new sound system, new carpet though out….
the organ is used at over 200 cmas shows a year as well as more than a dozen graduations for local colleges and universities
where is denpiano from bishop pipe organ ? i would like to here the real story
The screening rooms were used as offices for some time, One is now used for Rockette training and physical therapy. Another is called the “red carpet room” – it is also used by the rockettes for various reasons. And one of the 2 restrooms next to the staircase (that the RKO execs would have use to cross the roof) has been turned into whirlpool room for physical therapy.
vito – i do not know what the agreement was – but for a screening one would rent the entire hall – plus labor. I am assuming new line did not want to pay for security / ushers for the the mezzazines and well cleaning those mezz’s and lobbys, lounges and bathrooms on those floors.
most agreement with an artist in house are a 85 artist/15 house split – afte the house recoups all costs (labor , advert, etc. ) but this can vary.
Parts of the hall can be rented out for meetings confs etc. the grand lounge and the grand foyer are often used for parties – several times the the great stage has been used for dinner parties, the roxy suite and hold small dinner parties or cocktail parties.
During the run of the Xmas show – there are multiple cocktail parties an various mezzanine levels in the grand foyer before certain show
as far a mezzanines being closed for seating …that would have been new line cinema’s call, being that all movie premiers at the hall are basically rentals. i would guess that they did not want to pay for the extra labor to open them or clean them
premium seats are only the orchestra center 3 sections, first 15 rows, first 4 rows 250, the rest 150. some sat night shows all prem tix will be 250
justin – changes to marquee would first have to be approved by rock center (cablevision rents) and the then NY buildings landmark mark commission – won’t ever happen
I can’t be the only person to notice that anyone actually SAW the show this year is recommended it on this post, and the only detractors are people who didn’t see the show this year.
An old rockette saw it did not like it, i saw it ten years ago and did not like it, it is too expensive, well maybe its not that expensive but still won’t go, and the best one yet – i don’t like parades LOL !!! but you still want to know if there are camels, or do they still play organ….or is there still an orchestra ….HA HA HA
OK …the people who like the show will go and we will tell all the others who want NOTHING to do with show EVERYTHING about it
there ia demand the venues of this size, but at the right price, a company that is obviously expanding its real estate holdings by leasing the chicago and has a huge bankroll, balked at the price…..the city has make the business opportunity interesting to save the uptown – the city “could” , but they did not ….and the uptown’s best chance at survival to date slipped thru chicago’s fingers.
the loews 175 is selling out, but many first time patrons have been surprised at the state of the neighborhood ….lets keep our fingers crossed and wish the 175 luck, added police protection on show nights would be a big plus in keeping this venue filled. word of mouth stories could damage sales …this also differs from mst other theatres that it functions full time as a church, if the venue dark for six weeks – no biggie, it is not necessary to fill 150 dates on the calender , i assume the promoter is paying a rental fee for each event
Grinches, you whine that theatres are closing and nothing is being done to save them, then you have a viable theatre that is making a go of it and has restored the theatre impecably and you whine that it costs too much . you can’t have it both ways. Ed -the theatre almost closed forver in 1979 for not making a profit….so maybe bad management priced the show @ 11.50 The RCCS is still less that broadyway and there is always 50% off promo for shows before thanksgiving $35 for orch seats….$20 for 3rd mezz, so justin you and friends can still go in november and have dirtywater dog on the corner after the show for $100 with all due respect, it should be MORE than a broadway ticket, a 30 piece orchestra, 36 person dance troup, over 20 other singers dancers little people, 2 organists…and thats before you count all the staff behind the scenes…..there is no other show in NY that compares …it is worth $100 prime price in December.
instead of guessing and assuming and postulating….why don’t you all just go see the show ? it’s great!!!! organ, orchestra, camels, rockettes, singers, santa, sets, scrim, sound, snow, fireworks and streamers. The Don Hewitt special on NBC was nice….but it aint the same as being there. Al…besides being bet. 5'6" and 5' 10 ½ you have know tap, ballet and jazz and audition for you spot every year, they are talented…..speaking of mircophones , the rockettes shoes were miked for a couple numbers this year so you can hear the taps over the orchestra – i’ve seen the show at least 15 times over the past 30 years – this is the best one yet (the nativty was trimmed too much for my liking -beyond that …what fun !)
same show as last year – no changes

Beacon seating – LuisV is correct, the beacon does have 2,829 seats. The incorrect 2,600 number came from previous mgnt (not cablevision).

side note: they now sell remnants door mat size pieces of singing women carpet @ radiocity.com

i do not know the answer to that one
The words “Music Hall” was returned to the original gold color – returning the marquee to the orignal tri-color scheme
Leon :
whadaya mean? i’m lost
“The place has been scrubbed too clean. It’s historical patina has been washed away along with so many memories.”
Movie534 : you are obviously angry, you alluded to “getting the axe” in a Feb post….whats the deal ?
