Folks savy in local theatre lore have said that Reno Burlesque Theatre cashed in on overflow from their more popular neighbor Gaiety Burlesque, which presented better quality stage shows. Reno Burlesque presented four-a-day, second rate strip routines with a three piece (sax, piano, & drums) band, but whenever business slumped the Reno advertising budget went up, and for short periods more musicians would be playing the pit.
Some one in the Pollard research department needs to review historical material presented on their official Pollard Theatre web site. On this site the vintage photograph showing a band playing atop the theatre marquee is clearly labled 1912, yet written passage claims the structure wasn’t converted to theatre use until 1919. Which date is right?
Oklahoma City theatre history can easily be traced on ‘oklahoman archive’ (official site for Oklahoma Publishing Corp) web pages. Here Daily Oklahoman Newspaper issues dating back to 1901 can be pulled up, with theatre advertising in every issue. Be advised this is not a free search site.
