Happy New Year!!! Thank you for the update, Peter, and thanks for your designation wishes, John! It would also be great if the LPC calendared a hearing for the mostly intact theater lobby. Individual Landmark status for the facade is the first priority. Anyway, the co-owner Mario Saggese said at the LPC hearing last March that they are committed towards preserving as much of the theater’s original features uncovered as possible. We must be proactive and on top of these preservation issues, but also feel somewhat relieved.
Just a New Years wish that 2010 sees the designation of the Ridgewood as a NYC Landmark and the reopening of at least a portion of this gem as a movie house. And let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later!
I walked by the Ridgewood Theatre again this morning, December 11th, 2009.
No change since my last visit, except that there is now only one car seat on the floor between the closed outer gate and the doors of the inner lobby. Only one of those doors was open, the one closest to the ticket booth.
The Rolling Stones poster is still in the ticket booth window.
Then, as I did Nov 20th, I walked to the L / M station at Myrtle and Wyckoff. Again, two miracles there :
The men’s room was open, clean, brightly lit. No gay action or drug dealing within.
And the escalator was working, in both directions !
You’re welcome, Mike.
Hi Peter, Thank you! I look forward to hearing your findings.
No, John D, none of the interior doors were open. I could see no activity in the lobby.
Thanks, Mike. Will do.
At the March 2009 Ridgewood Theatre Public Hearing, to determine its eligibility as an Individual Landmark (the facade), the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission said the commissioners will take a vote this fall, but the fall is almost over, and their calendar/agenda on their website does not indicate a date for the vote to be taken.
** The Ridgewood Theatre should NOT be amongst the “heard but not designated properties” list, where testimony was taken, but a vote and ultimately the property remained stagnant. Therefore, YOU CAN HELP by calling the Landmarks Commission and encouraging them to take a vote ASAP on the Ridgewood Theatre, so history shouldn’t repeat itself. Call &/or e-mail both LPC parties below, and post your findings here and e-mail Friends of The Ridgewood Theatre Chair Michael Perlman at Thank you!

Peter, were any of the interior doors open, and could you see any changes occurring in the lobby? Hopefully, the landmarks issue will go forward soooner rather than later.
I also agree that the new subway station is something of a wonder. Both the Ridgewood and Bushwick communities worked hard to make this a reality.
Hopefully, more will occur soon on the landmarks front.

The Rolling Stones poster is still in the ticket booth window. I took another look at it this morning. Jagger’s hair is short enough for it to have been from the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour of 1990. It shows the Stones with keyboard players Matt Clifford and Chuck Leavell, and backup singers Bernard Fowler, Lisa Fisher, and Cindy Maisel.
Then I walked to the L / M station at Myrtle and Wyckoff. Two miracles there :
The men’s room was open, clean, brightly lit. No gay action or drug dealing within. The toilet actually flushed.
And the escalator was working, in both directions !
Indeed ! Too good to be true ! I’m afraid to wish for it !
The Rolling Stones at the Ridgewood? Great re-opening day act!!
I walked by the Ridgewood Theatre this morning. No change since my last visit, except that a photo of the Rolling Stones and about five of their backup musicians and singers was in the window of the ticket booth. Bill Wyman was still among them, so it must have been from 1990 or before.
Hi John, Thank you very much for your detailed assessment of your correspondence with Jenny Fernandez of the LPC. It sounds forthcoming, so let’s continue to hope that all goes smoothly, and may we all be in the forefront.
I spoke to Jenny Fernandez of the Landnarks Commission regarding the status of the designation earlier today. While an approval date has not yet been set, she noted that this should occur shortly and that the need to develop the extensive designation report constituted the prime reason for any delay. If you have ever read a designation report, you would find that the Commission does an extremely thorough job in justifying its actions. This will prove important when the Ridgewood’s proposal goes to the City Planning Commission and the City Council for final approval. It will also add a valuable link to this page.
From our conversation I got the clear impression that the approval process is going smoothly and that no unanticipated snags have thus far emerged. So, the successful end of this leg of the process appears to be near.
Yes, John D, thanks !
Thank you for your update, John!
Made a quick pass by today. No change – except that the two chairs behind the closed gates were differently configured. I also took a look at the back of the building. Nothing new has occured there.
Hopefully, we will be hearing shortly fro tme Landmarks Commission.
Thanks for the report John…
Thanks for reporting here, John D. You saw more than I did the last time I walked past.
I was able to pass by the Ridgewood yesterday afternoon. Behind the closed gates were two unoccupied chairs and two of the inner doors were open. This enabled me to look into the lobby. It appears that the rug has been removed, which is what site supervisor told me would occur as part of the renovation project. So some modest progress has been made.
One other interesting thing to report: At the extreme left of the lobby, just behind the ticket window, was what appears to be an old film projector. There were also a few sports trophies laid on the floor. I have no idea what this means, and since no one was there to tell me, it will remain a bit of a mystery.
No, John D., I did not. I viewed the theatre from the south side of Myrtle Avenue. I did not cross Myrtle Avenue to look through the gates and one open door into the outer lobby.
I am beginning to wonder if anything (at all) will now be done with the Ridgewood Theatre.
I think he means the advertising on this site on the theater pages….all the theaters.
Peter, did you see any of the advertizing that was noted by East Coast Rocker? If you did, what did it say?
I walked by the Ridgewood Theatre at about 11:30 a.m. this morning (Friday September 18 2009). I observed no changes since my last visit on Friday August 14 2009.
I will pass by the Ridgewood Theatre tomorrow morning and will post my monthly report here tomorrow afternoon.
