I checked my 1956 Motion Picture Almanac and found only Revere Drive-in. It might have been built later,or earlier and closed. Quite a few did when Television hit.
BREVARD,North Carolina had TWO drive-ins,the Bervard Drive-in and STAR Drive-in. Both parked 200 cars. Brevard was owned by E.M.Marks as was the STAR DRIVE-In. in 1956.
Got to visit the UNIVERSITY 6 Cinemas after it was gutted.Back Exit door was open and I went in with Nick to Explore.Nothing really to see.took a few pictures and left. As mentioned above,, in a beautiful location for Charlotte.
TLSLOEWS.I still think you could work up a good story or two on your NASHVILLE theatres like Nick is doing. KNOXVILLE is smaller than NASHVILLE,but has alot more theatre stories.
Great Article Raysson.I met Mrs.Peggy several times. We would hit CAROWINDS in the day and drive across town on the interstate to Belmont.I oftened wondered if there was a short cut the locals used. But she was a top theatre person, one i would have been happy to work for. The BELMONT is listed as one of my favorite THEATRES.
The PLAZA Theatre was going strong in the summer of 1977 with Gladys Knight in “PIPE DREAMS” rated PG.With FIVE showings. Thank goodness the other IRVIN-FULLER Theatre in town had “STAR WARS” because on the other screen at the PLAZA was a VERY WEAK “STARSHIP INVASIONS” rated Pg.
Sept.27 1974 “CALIFORNIA SPLIT” opens with George Segal and ELLOITT GOULD. rated R. “THE GODFATHER” returns in the other cinema II. They ran a late show at 12;15pm.Along with three earlier showings.
Playing on Friday night Nov.10 {no year given} LASH LaRue in “GHOST TOWN RENEGADES” Admission at the BIJOU was 15 and 25 cents. They were starting a new serial. and always “FRESH POPCORN”
June 23 1972 HENDERSONVILLE OUTDOOR CINEMA is playing HORROR beyond Belief! “THE BODY SHOP” second Feature NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and Third feature on Friday and Saturday is “WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH HELEN?” “THE BODY SHOP” was presented in 4 DIMENSION for extreme Realism. On Saturday night they played the “BODY SHOP” at the CAROLINA 1 so folks in Hendersonville could MEET THE STARS!!! It certainly wasn’t Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee.
These kinds of ads are pricless and our papers use to be filled with them.
April 7 1955 NOW SHOWING “HIT THE DECK” a Song-Splashed Musical with Jane Powell, Tony Martin,Debbie Reynolds, and Ann Miller. played Sunday, Monday, and Tueday,
I assume Jim is right on with his comment about the CAROLINA being a first run House and makes no sense to close a theatre playing Grade A product being Westerns or the latest Jerry Lewis Comedy.
