Dear Michael, I am from AUGUSTA and managed the only theatre in AUGUSTA that had 70mm and that was NATIONAL HILLS a heck of a better theatre than DANIEL VILLAGE.
Nick, read what wrote on COMMERCE DRIVE-in. I was just looking for pictures of it,saw a bunch of you and CHarlie at that big Autograph show inL.A.. I sent you some i know.years ago. It was screwed up like The Fun-Lan Drive in in Tampa.
TLSLOEWS drives me crazy with those questions. He asked about how many motorcyles would fit in a DRive-in. I guess one could figure It out,But WHO CARES!
Nick, now that i know YOU can do this maybe i will send some pictures for you to put on CT for me. Give Robin a break. You have some of BELMONT DRIVE IN, KINGS MTN DRIVE IN, and DIANE 29 DRIVE IN{ you and me snooping in the old booth and concession stand.}
Columbia Square Cinemas should be listed as Columbia 1 and 2 as far as i am concerned! It was a beautiful Twin theatre with large screens until GEORGIA THEATRESwent in there and put two more screens in. Yes, it closed as US 25 Drive in, but its history to anyone in Augusta was the WEIS DRIVE-in. By, the time Georgia THEATRES bought it,they didn’t care about putting on a good show. US 25 DRIVE In would often drop a reel. I knew the projectionist there and he told me he would make water ballons and throw on folks going to the snack bar, No i think it needs to stay WEIS DRIVE-IN Georgia Theatres did it no good.
Chuck, looking at the old Drive-in i guess it parked 300 or so cars. The concession stand was in good shape,so guess if you saw a movie at the other 2 screens you had to walk down to the old concession. I will say a close second to the most screwed up DRIVE-in WOULD BE the FUN-LAN DRIVE IN in TAMPA.FL. Heck, we watched a movie off of something that looked like a fence! Can’t make this up.
I am not kidding the screen was slapped up and painted like 12 year olds were building a tree fort. Its projector was a platter like the other two,but this one was in a much smaller trailer. I bet you couldn’t put 40 cars in that lot.You would be better off bringing a blanket and watching the movie that way. I am all for more Drive-ins,but to put screens up so cheaply,they would have been better off with the old COMMERCE Drive-in and not think about building a triple.I took pictures because i never saw such a set up.
Chuck, this was the most screwed up drive-in in the history of Drive-ins.I drove by the place several years ago. THE ORIGINAL COMMERCE DRIVE_IN looked okay.Laid out down a small hill in a little valley. What looked liked Screen Two was built to the right of the original drive-in back 30 or 40 yards,but if you in the old drive-in YOU COULD CLEARLY SEE both screens. How can you watch a movie like that. The projector for what i am calling screen two was in a single wide trailer.
Now Screen number 3 was closer to the main road and the screen was tiny and i swear they must have went to LOEWS BUILDING SUPPLY ..to build ..
The TIMES THEATRE on August 9 1974 was playing Clint Eastwood in “THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT” rated R.They started showing it at 11:40 am and run shows with the last one at 11:50 pm.
On AUGUST 9 1974 the SKYWALK 1 and 2 cinemas was playing “THE STING” and “THE GREAT GATSBY” both starring Robert Redford.and rated Pg. There was a sneak preview that night in the theatre that played “THE STING” starring Liv Ullman and Peter Finch. These theatres were MID STATE CINEMAS. It amazes me how many Cincinnati theatre ARE NOT LISTED ON CT. isn’t there anyone from Ohio that can get these theatres on.
On August 9 1974 the VALLEY Cinema was playing “THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT” rated G. Matinees Daily .with no passes.They even ran a midnight how on this movie. It was run by MID STATES CINEMAS.
It had to be in Pennsylvania or Ohio,but i didn’t think the Amish watched movies. Are either you are kidding again.
And its still a pain the butt to work for ushers and doormen. You ever deal with old ladies that like musicals.

Go up to JOE VOGEL post you can see this DRIVE-in from a old BOXOFFICE MAG. It was great seeing it since i tried to remember what it looked like.
I somehow saved a CINCINNATI paper because of all the theatre ads YOU DON’T SEE ANYMORE! I know its strange to save a old paper.
“HOMEBODIES” was a movie,rated PG.looking at the ad in the CINY paper. I can’t remember it either.
We didn’t get it it went to DANIEL VILLAGE. GEORGIA THEATRES got all the UA product.
