Well, this LOEWS THEATRE was playing “DIRTY MARY and CRAZY LARRY ” in theatre one.with “BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID” in theatre two. Both rated PG. Theatre one shows are 7:30 and 9:10 with Theatre Two showings at 7 and 9.
I always enjoyed viewing trailers while working at theatres.Saw thousands i am sure. I guess the “JAWS” trailer was one of the best. Most all the BONDS were great. “OH,GOD” was different in that the trailer was BLANK,and the moviegoer saw a white screen while George Burns told you about the movie. I had never seen anything like that. At one time my cousin Ray, Built a whole 20 minute reel of trailers from the CAROLINA theatre in Hendersonville,N.C. and “STAR WARS” was one of the trailers on that reel. Not having a 35 mm projector to show them we would often watch them after hours at the IMPERIAL,in Augusta.
Can you believe Nick. I thought i did pretty good intros, but this beats anything I have read lately,And Nick, Helps me often with my theatres. Had he worked in business as long as you and i we would be reading “WAR and PEACE”. LOL
Nick, i am going to mail Robin some pictures of NATIONAL HILLS closed and I think you all will enjoy the pictures,So glad I drove over there in 1996 and took pictures. Wish you would have had a camera at DALE MARBY when you went back after closing, but we never think about it.
The Daniel Village Theatre Building id still standing. At one time COMCAST was in it,but it is still standing. Nick, DALE MARBY was the best i have ever read. I hope TLSLOEWS sees it and reads it.I wish others would take note of it.
Nick, I knew “SOUND OF MUSIC” was one of your favorite, hope you don’t think bad of me for ripping it,but i did from a theater perspective and not film.
I often wondered what happen to EARL OWENSBY. But, some of his movies like BUCK STONE COUNTY PRISON were rated R. So don’t make him out to be Disney. I had a couple of his one sheets “CHALLENGE” and “DEATH DRIVER” wish i would have kept them .Drive-in Fare.
Just what attracts certain people to the business? I loved movies, but i don’t think that was it because am sure we played more than we watched. The excitement of opening night on a big picture tht YOUR theatre has and isn’t playing day and date with several others. Is it the easy girls. Geez, we had them here especially at COLUMBIA 1 and 2. I guess being a part of the movie world might be it. I just knew that is all i wanted to do for 7 years. and even though i never managed a theatre being a number guy was just fine with me. Heck, we did most the work anyways and never had to listen to a D.M..
It might have played 19 weeks in AUGUSTA,Ga. but the only place to see it in 70mm was NATIONAL HILLS,not Daniel VillageTheatre. I worked at National Hills.
Sound of Music was a pain the butt movie to play. Granted I was about 17 when it come around about every fall in the middle 70’s and with all old ladies we were constanly having to adjust the termostat,It was TOO cold,it was to hot. The sound was not right. anyone that had to tear tickets did not want this booked in. Second runner up in the old ladies driving you crazy “GONE WITH THE WIND” if i never see either one again I will die a happy man.
Intresting question, don’t know how it got it’s name certainly the owner could have loved the circus. There are a few Midway Drive-ins on CT. I think could have come up with a jazzier name, but wasn’t there a NORMAL theatre on the other day, they sure did not employee any of the Augusta gang.We were anything but NORMAL. Isent Robin a picture of us dressed up like the MARX BROTHERS [promoting alate show} i had hope she would put it on,but I can’t be too picky she has done ALOT.
The 360 Drive-in parked 421 cars,so somewhere another spot was made.maybe they made the manager park out by the box office. The 360 Drive-in was owned by L.W.Lee.
How do you ever forget a girl called ECHO,had she been a Sue i probably wouldn’t have asked. My cousin worked at theatre in Hendersonville,N.C. he did everything. They took out the balcony and squeezed a small theatre in the space. It seated about 125 and they called it CAROLINA PENTHOUSE. See how I got back onTOPIC.
Robin, I found the pictures I took after NATIONAL HILLS closed.Have our office, booth, popcorn room.concession stand ripped apart and ME standing in front of that great 70mm screen,of course Georgia Theatres ripped the screen to pieces. I will get them in the mail i know folks on CT will want to see them.

I gave the 20 minute preview reel to the Projectionist at the Imperial theatre to keep. I guess he still has it.
