Thanks techman, I have seen the Loews Valencia page there are many comments and photos on that page, it would take a long time to read all the comments there.
Great photos Alonzo, the first photo looks like the World Premire of Gone With The Wind,my grandmother was there that night, she also bought a brick from the building when it was razed,I wish I knew what happened to it.
The worst movie ever to be shown at this theatre during my days was the Warren Oates film,“Bring Me The Head Of Afraido Garcia” a low budget film shot in Mexico.I do not not know how we got this booking as the film was terrible and I do not believe we even sold 100 tickets all the one week it played. But if my memory has not failed me we opened with a new 007 movie the next week to big, big, business.Oh well the theatre business.
BobbyS, Yes Loews is still around, just not in the theatre business, they still have their hotels one of them being the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel here in Nashville.Any new word on the rehab of the Loews Kings anyone?
No the theatre was torn down after the fire, but the lobby was used for retail until the mid 80’s.Church Street Center was built on this site but was also torn down about 20 years later.I have posted some photos of this theatre on its page here on Cinema Treasures.Click on to it to read its history.
Sorry that sould be, with our City Manager, not with or City Manager. Also when I was the Manager at the Loews Melrose I was in the lobby of the theatre one afternoon when I heard the pay phone ringing so I picked up the phone and it was Rein Rabakuk calling from Dallas to tell me to fire my Asst. Manager. I thought this was strange as the theatre was not open in the afternoon then, and how did he know I was even there.Anyway when my Asst.came in that night and saw me there in my suit that night,I was off most Friday Nights but had to go to the bank and do the checks and send out the weekly reports, I would wear my street clothes, and he would run the theatre that night,he knew something was up,and I had to give him the bad news.Sorry I am of topic, now back to the State Theatre.
Techman The Loews Vendome was bought by Loews in 1920 and ran it till it burned in August 1967. It was located on Church Street facing up Capitol Blvd, looking directly up to the Tennessee Capitol Building. I quess this would be a “Real” Loews although they did not build it.After the fire at the Vendome Loews leased the Crescent down the street Calling it the Loews Crescent. They also leased in 1967 the Melrose Theatre called the Loews Melrose and ran it till late 1982, the building and shopping center were owned by E.B. Raskin Co.They also leased the Madsion Square Theatre calling it the Loews Madison,it was the newest theatre we had then being built in 1969.I worked in these last 3 theatres, all are listed on C.T.Both Loews in Memphis we real Loews as far as I know.
Thanks Chas and Chuck, In Nashville our City Manager had his office upstairs in the Crescent building but he was also the Manager of that theatre and had an Asst,Me most of the time, the others 2 theatres had their own Manager and Asst.Rein Rabakuk was our District Manager based out of Dallas he would visit our theatres about once a month with or City Manager Robert “BoB” Sokol.t was funny he would only stay about 15 minutes at each theatre and be gone.
