JUNE 16 1974,bet Projectionist Chuck Dray had to preview these two movies to snip out any nudity before showing in North Augusta,S.C.
Now playing “THE TEACHER” and “THE STEPMOTHER” I often wondered if any one noticed the spice marks.
Nick, If you get a chance i am having a good discussion on the Ratings systems with two members one is on NATIONAL HILLS and the other on DANIEL VILLAGE. I know you working in the business and have shown movies i know you have a view on the ratings.
ED, you are not going to believe this but the guy that played the bus driver lives down the street from me. He,like me was a Stagehand, working MIDNIGHT COWBOY. The actor that was suppose to play that part got drunk the night before,so the next morning the Director puts him in the movie.
I asked him why he hasn’t let one of TV or papers do a feature on him and he flat out said “No Way” .I don’t know,I think it was because the film was X rated. Small World. I Knew the Projectionist at the Hilltop He probably dropped a reel or two on WOODSTOCK. Chuck could it until he started showing movies on platters.
Of all Paul Newman’s movies i only worked a few. Re-release on “BUTCH CASSIDY and THE SUNDANCE KID”, SLAP SHOT and I think his greatest work, THE VERDICT. It was our Christmas movie at REGENCY and played in CINEMA ONE. It did good business considering most of the crap they peddle for movies.
The LAKE DRIVE-IN in the late 50’s was owned by Pueblo Drive-in THEATRES which also ran the Pueblo Drive-in in that same city. L.R. Semon was President of that company. Lake Drive-in parked 500 cars the same as the Pueblo Drive-in.
Nick, you were doing your next story on the 20th Century? I keep looking,If it’s another one call me so i can read what you wrote. Thanks for some great stories on TAMPA’S theatres.
I wonder what they could have trimmed after the outlaw {Dennis Hopper} gets his fingers cut off and they show that. Yeah, Another CT member is telling me the same thing on the NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE site. I have the TRUE GRIT one sheet and it is rated G, but would it never be released today as a G.
“SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER” opens and a tag is added by the rating by the management “ PARENTS: This motion picture contains profain lanuage.Plays in CAROLINA 2 the penthouse cinema.{not alot of seats for this blockbuster}.
But,by the 70’s a whole different look a small cinema where the balcony use to be and the CAROLINA is playing"ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW" Admission is $1.50 which ain’t bad,or 50 cents if you are in costume.
Well, we got the news. The Big movie event of 1979 is going to play in COLUMBIA 1. “HURRICANE” with Mia Farrow opens and man, this was “HEAVEN’S GATE,before "HEAVEN’S GATE” a complete bomb. I am not too sure if it even played second run here in Augusta.
I know by the end of the run we were playing to empty houses. I was so sure no one was coming i even shampooed the carpets in that theatre.
Thank goodness, NATIONAL HILLS played a lot of family films. NOW SHOWING June 16 1974 is Disney’s “ALICE IN WONDERLAND” and a second feature “STORMY” rated G.
Okay,so it was resubmitted like all the HAMMER horror movies. I never thought much of the ratings when i worked in the theatre business.Because,i guess they are rated in Hollywood which had different standards than Georgia. I saw “BILLY JACK” witha PG rating and i couldn’t believe it was not an R rated film. I guess MIDNIGHT COWBOY could easily get a PG-13. It was rated X and had less nudity than that lousy “BILLY JACK” So it goes.

NOW SHOWING ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO and BLACK HORSE CANYON. with cartoons, short subjects and news.
PLaying First run at THE PARK theatre CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Shows at 7:15 and 9:40 .I find this odd only two shows at a theatre in a city the size of Memphis.Usually cities that size play matinees and evening shows. Not here. two shows!
Louis Malle’s “PRETTY BABY” set in New Orleans opened at the Robert E.Lee Theatre. $1.50 before 1:45pm. Last show was at 9:30pm. Wonder what kind of business it did.
Ken,It gets harder and harder to spot old Drive in sites as you drive down back roads. I guess aerial photos are about the only way. I was enjoyed finding one like the WAYNESBORO DRIVE IN on CT,Watching for snakes in the tall Georgia grass, hoping for a good find like i did at the WOODZO drive in on CT.Yeah, it is getting harder and harder.
Jan 23 1977,WOODSTOCK returns for a one week run having played on countless late shows and Drive-ins in Augusta. I was at COLUMBIA 1 and 2,but heard the print was not in good shape, and once again, sound problems for some moviegoers.More headaches.
