The Sanford City Council was considering a proposal to turn the Wilrik into a performing arts center in September 2004. Since the theater is currently listed on loopnet, nothing came of that idea, I would assume.
Approval of Resolution Supporting and Authorizing the Submittal of a Predevelopment Grant Application to the Rural Center of North Carolina â€" (Exhibit A)
Resolution was approved supporting and authorizing the submittal of a predevelopment grant application to the Rural Center of North Carolina and authorizes the City Manager to sign on Council’s behalf. The Building Reuse and Restoration Grants Program was designed to spur economic activity and job creation by assisting in the productive reuse of vacant buildings in a distressed area. There are two types of grants. The development grant would offer $400,000 to a developer who has clients lined up and just needs to up fit the building. The predevelopment grant is for soft costs for an owner/developer to see if their project would be potentially viable. Soft costs are feasibility assessments, marketing analysis, architectural/engineering analyses, and legal costs involved in the project. The maximum grant is $25,000 to be used for soft costs. The developer would match the $25,000 predevelopment grant with $5,000 and local government must provide at least $1,000 which would come out of the DSI’s budget.
DSI felt that a requested submitted by Bill McDonald to convert the Wilrik Theatre into a performing arts center would be a viable project.
Not really, but I am a Shakespeare fan. I was reading Julius Caesar the other day when I saw the posting for the Bardavon, so that made me wonder about the origin of the name. I would be curious to know if it is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable or the second A.
In 2003, the Bardavon newsletter stated that the aforementioned mural was commissioned in 1923 and was based on an engraving from “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”: http://tinyurl.com/5nmkeq
The name Bardavon is taken from an old mural in the building, long since painted over, entitled The Bard of Avon (a reference to William Shakespeare).
Mark Twain once performed on its stage.
Those who visited the Bardavon as guests of honor include industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (to celebrate the laying of the cornerstone of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge), as well as former US Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (both appearing in political rallies at the Bardavon).
Bob Dylan has used the Bardavon for tour rehearsals as well as rehearsals for his 2006 album Modern Times.
I was wondering about the restaurant on the right side of the postcard of 8/16/08. Has that part of the building been converted regarding the extra screens that were added?
In counterpoint, I would say that if the theater featured burlesque with short racy films screened as filler, that probably wouldn’t qualify it to be listed as a legitimate house. That’s what the films described above sound like to me. The patrons weren’t going to the place for the films, they were going there for the girls.
I can’t imagine that this is not considered a movie theater wherein some converted shoestore that showed adult films is allowed in. I have nothing against adult theaters, but this seems inequitable.
It showed movies for two years and it doesn’t qualify? Don’t we have theaters on here that opened in the beginning of the year and closed six or seven months later?
There have been discussions about adding the Belasco, but the consensus has been live theater only. I think your item above puts a hole in that argument.

Confirmed by Wikipedia:
The Bardavon can seat up to 944.
The name Bardavon is taken from an old mural in the building, long since painted over, entitled The Bard of Avon (a reference to William Shakespeare).

The Bard of Avon would be William Shakespeare. I don’t know if there’s any connection to the Bardavon, however.
It’s Niagara Falls, isn’t it?
No, there are lots of adult theaters listed.

You could always ask Ken Roe. He was one of the contributors to the Cinematour page for the Belasco.
OK, I guess senior year or something like that. Thanks.

I’m wondering if SR66 means the theater is on Route 66. as in “State Route 66”.
